Is there anything special I should do when replacing a knock sensor other than unbolting old one and bolting on new one?
 
Make sure you torque it down to the proper spec. Under or over tightening is bad, very bad. :-D

Spec should be 15 ft lbs for a '90 740 IIRC.

It’s a piezo, so it will output a DC voltage when its deformed. Over tightening it will cause a rise in the baseline of the signal and make it less sensitive. Under tightening it could result in it falling off.
