Is there anything special I should do when replacing a knock sensor other than unbolting old one and bolting on new one?

Make sure you torque it down to the proper spec. Under or over tightening is bad, very bad. 
Spec should be 15 ft lbs for a '90 740 IIRC.

Well now you know that I have to ask "why?"
But I won?t touch the knock sensor if that?s the case.

Tighter doesn't increase the sensitivity. I can't find my notes but I played with torque on the sensor a while back watching with a scope.
