Source for New or NOS 240 Turbo Group A Turbine Housings (?)

Hi guys,

I'm working on a project (for my job) in which I need to get my hands on at least 20 pcs of the original 240 Turbo Group A turbine housings, or something close enough that I can convert to that spec.

The Group A turbocharger was a parts bin special of T3 components, almost all of which I've been able to identify and locate within Garrett.

The turbine housing is elusive though. I believe it was an 0.63 A/R but if anyone has good information that it was some other A/R I would love to hear it. It did have the Volvo specific T3 inlet flange with the circular register and bumps in the casting to accommodate. It used the 5-bolt outlet with the separate wastegate housing or "elbow" as was common on gasoline T3s.

Turbine wheel was a T31, 68 trim, but if I can't find the finished machined housings for this exact wheel then I can always open up a housing machined for a smaller wheel, or machine a raw casting if necessary.

Any leads, whether they end up being dead-end or otherwise, are appreciated!

Awesome link I've never seen before. :cool: The fiberglass ducting for the Kjet is particularly interesting. How much is the mercedes benz unit selling for these day$ and where can you get those beautiful braided lines for the kjet?

Edit: NM, Mueller's solution is 1000% easier and complete in one action.

They did a lot of work to shut down the easy ways, kudos. However, if you're willing, brute force has an elegance all its own:

1) Go to the site, then open developer tools in the browser and View Source. It'll be lots and lots of html, don't worry - you're just going to extract some pieces.

2) Search for the characters 'src=' (without the quotes). This will find the image tags, which look like this:

3) The quoted text after the src= part is the the URL for the image in question, in this case

Select and copy that entire URL, without the quotation marks.

4) Paste the URL into a new browser tab/window, and you'll see the image. Because it's alone in a page without all that clever code, we can save or print it. Because we're good people we'll only save images for personal use and not redistribute, even though they're watermarked.

5) Repeat for all images on the page

Cheers, that is a good resource! I do have a revision of the turbo homologation pages from 1984 so I've got all the relevant dimensions already. Looks like they didn't change too much between 1982 to 1984 so it's a good data point regardless. Still no mention of turbine housing A/R unfortunately, and I don't have the exact part number either.

To be clear - I'm looking to buy 20 pcs or more of the physical housing. Whether they are raw castings or already machined doesn't matter too much. I'm hoping there are some dusty parts on a shelf somewhere. If not then we have to do some reverse engineering and make a batch of new castings.

Be aware a good 8 port bosch k jet fuel distributor is no longer a PMO its an RMO. The last one i saw online with all the pieces was nearly 2K.....:) If your pc is any good U can capture whatever u want that's on the screen and drop it in paint applet to manipulate its size or whatever. Its really simple. Do a rt click and see if you have the web capture applet.

Id like a link to the braided vw lines for the fuel distributor. I'm thinking of some type of water injection through kjet ports using this setup in conjunction with the sequential ECU. What i like most is all the fiberglass duct work and the relocation of the distribtor in the vehicle. Like an idiot I discarded the flap valve so all i have now is just the fuel distributor head. The '77 242 has one in it but that would be the car to do a vintage groupA setup like this in. Im very interested in the plugs used to create the fiberglass ductwork.

These photos obviously are the property of Bjorn Ohlson but I just wanted to show you anything can be captured if you are slick enuf.... like these pieces I wish I had a plug for. 3d print quite possible. At benz we have a device in the calibration room. All Id have to do is take several photos and it will derive the dimensions etc to create a cad model. Its really cool and really expensive. You could print the plug then create it GFK or CF with a vacuum injection process.

If that turbine housing was only used for 240 GrA I would more or less say finding 20pieces today will be nearly impossible :/

The T3 had a long and prolific career. I?ve found drawings for a few other part numbers that are essentially the same thing, so I think there?s some hope. The key specs are 0.63 A/R with the Volvo specific inlet flange and 5-bolt outlet.
 
All 240 turbos were sold with a .63 housing. The very early cars had flat flange T3 .63 housings as I have one of those cars. It's an 81 242 turbo with a very early intercooler kit on it. All original with the original turbo. I was told it was one of the first turbos that the Volvo dealer in Bear Mt NY got to sell. I do have several B21Ft engines with turbos on them if you want a used part to check out.

Before I go any further though I really need to confirm which A/R the race cars used, and then find a source for new or NOS as-new housings in that size.

Doesn’t ATP make a 3ish different AR sizes in the old school t3 turbine housings?

Or are you looking for the exact GrA/OEM casting?

Yep, ATP does make T3 housings but not with the added ?ears? on the inlet flange to accommodate the Volvo machined register.

If I could find the exact GrA casting that would be ideal, or a similar one as long as the A/R is correct. It might have been bigger than 0.63. In any case I?m pretty sure it was in a part family shared with production housings.

I think the best sauce could be S?v?r? It is full of old Volvo Frats.
