Thinking of adding an ashtray light

I'm thinking of adding a light for the ashtray that comes on with the headlights and has a momentary normally open switch in the back that turns the light off when the ashtray is pushed in. I'm also wondering what bulb i should use ( I'd rather just a mellow glow that isn't blinding).. has anyone done this before or something similar? any pictures they'd like to share?

I have been contemplating an ash tray light too.

but never got around to it though. maybe use a ctr console type bulb? (the small skinny ones). cut a hole in the ash tray receiver on top? maybe use an old red "fasten Safety belt" lense and wire the light to the IC dimmer rheostat for brightness control?

or.... maybe use the E Brake console's fasten Seat belt" light and holder? (the one above rear pass. ashtray)

fastening the bulb's holder to the ashtray receiver might be the tricky part.......... pehaps drill a very small hole and use a very short metal or wood screw?

this is the easiest thing to do...

remove console affix a bulb above astray slot... done..

who cares if he smokes

Good call on the seat belt lens! Ive got a spare one that I'm not using so this is perfect! Thanks!

no problem...I hope to get around to doing mine ...maybe this summer.

Might want to check out how I added lighting to my 240s ciggie lighter. Check out my build thread if interested in that. Especially if have girlfriend/s that tend to melt your Ctr console when they can't hit the hole with the hot lighter..

I am guessing that there is a fair chance that somebody somewhere has done it, and a much slimmer chance that that person will find this thread. It may be necessary to figure it out for yourself.

OP is holding his own very well against rude assault. I don't believe he has stated in the thread that he indeed does smoke.

My idea: use the glove box for an ashtray. Already has light with an automatic switch.
