"Mr Fredrickson" A B8444S swapped 240 from the UK

Some random information I've accumulated, stuff I found really difficult to find online without having an engine to measure.

The B8444s crank bolt pattern is 8 bolts on a 76mm PCD. However the spacing of one bolt is shifted by 4? so the spacing is 45?, 45?, 41?, 49?, 45?, 45?. The location dowel is a 6mm pin sitting 5mm proud of the mounting face. I haven't accurately measure this but its on an 80mm PCD approx.

The raised lip/cup on the crank nose looks to be 1.750". I measure it to be 1.752 and machined my boss to 1.753

Interestingly the engine bolting flange seems to be at least based on the Volvo Whiteblock. I tried the flange template on a spare T5 block. The locating dowels are in the same place relative to the crank centre and number of the bolt holes line up exactly.

My exhaust flanges should arrive this week, I'm collecting my flywheel and gearbox next weekend. I sourced my steel plate. The next months should see some good progress.

Volvo v8 - starter?

Hello
I am reading your thread. What about the starter? Any plans for that?
I remember back for a decade ago, an engine like this was fitted in a volvo 242 in sweden. I cant find the thread anymore, but I remember they had to chassis adjustment, because of the starter.

Hi

I'm planning on mounting the original xc90 starter to my adapter plate and then cutting and bracing the gearbox bellhousing. You are correct depending, on where I place the starter I'm anticipating having to make some clearance in the tunnel.

Been a bit quiet last couple of weeks getting back into it now though.

Collected my GS6-53DZ and clutch kit

Built a little scaffold frame to hold and support the engine and allow me to roll it onto its end for working on the gearbox mounting flange easier. Worked really well. I can easily roll the engine on my own, I often have to improvise as I work on my own nearly all the time.

My exhasut manifold flanges have also arrived but theyre currently sandwiched behind the brackets in the frame picture.

I've also decided to machine my own flywheel. I've ordered some materials and hope to make a start sometime in the next week.

How many bolt holes match between the V8 and a whiteblock? This may pave the path to using a T5 or a CD009 or even an M90 on the V8, using one of the commonly available adaptor plates.

While you have it available, measure the BCD of the crank and the snout and the pilot bearing hole size. Maybe we can figure out a flywheel and clutch setup.

Sorry for the lack of updates been busy but still working on the project in short bursts

made a centring ring for the trans input shaft just to make sure everything stayed concentric during the fit up

Sourced my material for the adapter plate and started "cutting" out the shape

Glued it to the face plate for turning

I apologise friends, i've been very poor at Volvo work recently.

I've pretty much finished my adapter ring for the gs6-53dz gearbox to B8444s. I've hung it on my kitchen wall and I'm quite pleased with it......can you tell :)

I've finished chopping up my sump and have plated in the fore portion. I've had to install 3 M18 sump plugs to allow access to three internal sump bolts. The old sump had an access panel which gave access to these hidden fasteners. I intend to relocate the oil filter from its current location (its excatly where my fronte crossmember wants to sit so I've modified 2 x AN -10 fittings to go on the feed and return of the oil to water heat exchanger which I don't want to use, these will connect to a remote oil filter.

Started work to extend the oil pickup pipework. Made a little jig to hold the oil pickup flange so i can machine out the remnants of the brazed/soldered stub.

Gearbox and engine fully mated. I've had a reasonable quote for a custom flywheel also @£800.

I sourced a different gearbox rear bracket from a different model BMW which has a single central bush instead of the twin inclined bushes from the gearbox donor.

Original bracket followed by the single bush variant.

With the new bracket I also recieved the crossmember from the BMW. I replciated the bush mounting arrangment in steel. I have all the other materials ready for the gearbox crossmember so itll be pretty quick to knock up once i hange the engine in the right place.

Sump progress, I'll mock up the bowl once the engine is hanging in the bay and I've a better idea of clearances.

I'm talking to Emerald (My ecu manufacturer) about driving the quad VVT's they wanted to know the cam position trigger pattern so i drew this up for them. They are confident the ecu can drive 4 cams.

This is the lathe jig for machining out the brazed oil pickup pipe

The finished adapter plate on my kitchen wall.

I say finished, but I don't currently have any where to mount a starter motor :) That'll come later, and it still needs 2 more mounting mounting hole drilled and helicoiled.

I seriously love you.

I have a 93 945 that I recently traded my 90 244 for.
It's engine and trans are out, it's getting cleaned up.
And I have a B8444 that I'll be trying to fab up intake bits for and fitment testing here soon I hope.
I miss my old 855s, I wanted another wagon and I wanted to keep it Volvo powered.
The dream is 8 carbs, maybe microsquirt for vvt and ignition coltrol.
I'm going that route first then on to the whole trans and oil pan dealio.
This is a tremendous help and makes this venture not so daunting.
Thanks for sharing!

No worries mate, I've had sooooo much help from other people. If I can pay it forward even a little it's good.

Any questions fire them over.

Apologies yes it's been a few months. I do have some good work to report.will post in the next day or 2, covering engine mounts, cooling and sump modifications.
