T5 in a 240

I'v been sat around on weekends, bored. So I decided to take up a new project. T5's are a solid engine, sound great and can be converted to rwd & 240's look great and give a good platform for what I'm doing. Sorted.

Que the 850 T5:

The car was a bargain, it was crudely advertised so it didn't gain much interest. Turned out it was a trade in at a dealership which they decided to auction due to its age. It had a full and extensive service history and relatively low mileage which was a bonus considering I only wanted the engine. The car turned over and fired up from cold which was great news.

960 2.5:

From reading around it became obvious that I was going to struggle to get hold of a 960 equipped with the M90 white block transmission. I did have some luck though and I managed to source one after a couple of months looking. The car ticked all the boxes, and was under budget, bonus! However the transportation costs soon brought the total cost back up. Damn. The car arrived this Friday just gone, we got to work on it late Saturday afternoon and had the engine out on Sunday afternoon.

I did feel guilty afterwards considering how rare these are to find as a manual, but the interior was pretty shagged and the car generally had seen better days, so knowing that all the bits I can salvage from the 960 will make life a lot easier for me when fitting the t5 into the 240 justifies it for me.

That's pretty much where I stand for the time being. I think I have the majority of the foundations for really making a move on this project. The last big piece of the puzzle that is missing is of course the 240 which is in the pipeline, I'm pretty set on a red 240 estate, I narrowly missed out on one a few weeks back which annoyed me abit but hey ho that's how it goes.

The next port of call is getting the engine rebuild on the go, I have been speaking with Lars at LG speed, I was looking to buy a set of H beam connecting rods from him. Has anyone got any first hand experience with these? I assume there pretty similar to the R sport rods.

This is a pretty big learning curve for me as the scale of the project is greater than my past ones. So any pointers or advice is always appreciated.

Thanks all.

Updates to follow.

Sad purple 960 is sad. :(

Good luck with the build, though! Sounds fun! And why not throw that nice 6 cylinder lump in there instead? They're great engines too and they sound just as glorious uncorked. See my build thread for video proof! Lol.

Also keen to see the 240 this will be going into. Have you fitted H beam rods to the engine as yet?

Good to see another UK tbricker here

nice project!
T5 swaps are getting common these days :D

Poor 960 looked nice on the picture. Have you crushed it, yet?

Good luck with the build :)

Heres How mine looked last month. Ive had it re-wired again since then so it looks slightly different now.

Ill make a start on a thread today to summarise it all so you can all catch up :) Only 96 pages on volvoforums to sift through and condense!

Hi everyone, Sorry about the LACK of progress I have been simply overwhelmed these last few weeks (learning & construction mainly). There has been lots going on at home (building a workshop to get me out the garage)

My financial situation currently is poor due to some rather large investments. But the investments should save me some money in the long run as I will not have to out source as much welding work or any other general fabrication work.

Again sorry for the delays. I will pick this back up when I can.

Antz - that looks the nuts!!! Very tidy.

Narancs - I haven't crushed the 960 yet, its still sat on my drive.

updates to follow.

Thanks again,
Valve.

Ok, back in business. It seems like forever. Sorry for the delay, there has been a lot on at home as mentioned above. However I do now have a proper place to work which should help alot with the project.

One workshop/New home.

The Engine has now been stripped and is waiting to go to the machine shop. I am just in the process of buying everything I need to had the engine built back up.

Pistons purchased. Cheers to Rob at Race engineering.

I am however still trying to sort the connecting rods, I've been speaking with LG speed again this week so I can hopefully get them ordered this weekend.

I am also pleased to say the last car of the three has been purchased,

I couldn't be happier with the 240. It's been looked after to say the least. It even came with the original receipt for the car in 1990, a fuel log and full service history. Ideal really for what I'm doing as I needed a very solid base.

I will keep the updates coming more regularly now, Ill be making a start on the 240 while I wait for funds to come in to complete the engine build.

Thanks again,
Valve.
