Catch can install; am I doing it right?

I had really oily intercooler pipes and a clean flame trap and no money for a real catch can so I spent $30 on this.


Constructive criticism appreciated

Okay op, here's your constructive criticism, use a metal water bottle you get from walmart or whatever for $8, so the same thing you have but pack it slap full of STAINLESS steel wool, not normal steel wool, think kitchen scrubbers.

Thanks @canadan I will probably make a new one with a bottle like that but I couldn't resist trying the arizona can first. I used copper covered steel wool (sold as kitchen scrubbers), what is the advantage to using stainless steel?

Stainless doesnt rust. When you use normal steel wool or copper coates steel wool after a while it rusts and you get nasty **** everwhere. You can imagine how i learned that one.

One of my cars is the same as i mentioned/you did except instead of venting back into the turbo inlet i put a breather, i get a whiff of oil vapors ever now and again but have no emissions checks to worry about so it stays just to keep the engine from ingesting any extra oil. Food for thought.
 
PVC doesn't look that bad when it's painted. And it's easier to tap PVC for nipples instead of spending money on fittings like that. 2 1/2" painted PVC with caps on both ends. Two nipples, and a drain on the lower cap...

That being said...... Can needs to be sitting straight up and down. There should be a media (as said above) in the can to pull the oil vapor out of suspension. It will fill up at some point.... how you going to empty it? It is better to have the bottle under vacuum then to vent to atmosphere. However, if it's metered air (after the AMM) then the system needs to be sealed.
 
Thanks that makes since and will be considered for v2.

I have a nut JB welded to the under side of the can with a bolt threaded through it for a drain plug. Does anyone know where I could find affordably priced hose? The can is mounted where it is right now because I could only afford 3 feet of summit racing -10 an hose, witch is stupid because I'm pretty sure it's overkill and its not very flexible.
 
Something doesn't look right. The catch can is connected from the intake to the intake? Hate to say it but oily intercooler usually means turbo shaft seal is leaking.

It's not intake to intake... It's plugged prior to the turbo inlet which sucks the vapors back into the intake.
 
B21ft not b22...and its not born with a mitsu its born with a garrett t3. Ignore above post and buy you a rebuild kit if theres more than say, half quart in the intercooler? Honestly if it was mine and didnt smoke i wouldnt rebuilt it. If there was no metal on metal contact obviously...
 
alright cool. I was wondering about that cause the turbo clearly reads garret on the intake side.;-) I do not have nearly that much oil in my pipes or intercooler so I will probably put the turbo rebuild off until the summer at least. While I have the thread open I have another question: as sort of a side project for rainy days I have been rebuilding/cleaning a b23 style intake manifold off of my 86 245dl parts car to put on this car. I've heard a lot about the "90+" manifolds being better, Is it worth it to put on a pre 90' manifold over the b21ft manifold? Am I wasting my time? Is the car worth all of the time and money i spend on it? Why does it still look and run like chit after all of the work i put into it? Why do we put so much work into a form of transportation that will be deemed obsolete and environmentally unethical within my lifetime? Anyway hopeful someone who knows more than me can help with at least one of those questions.
