A friend who has a 1974 142 reached out to me about an issue. While a friend of theirs was borrowing the brick, they heard a dragging from the back. As probably expected from the posting title turned out be the Panhard bar. The post/stud is still on the rear axle but the mounting point in the rear side-member is totally ripped apart. What I am trying to figure out is the Panhard mounting point on the 1974 140s something which can be replaced out at all? Is the rear & side-member pieces removable from the frame or will this mounting point need to be reconstructed?

What I have found trying to research this question.
1974 looks to be a one-year only set up:
- 1974 Panhard bar (1206059) is different from the 1973 models (677284) and the 1975 240s
- 1971-73 140/160 have a bracket (p/n 684313) for the Panhard mount.

From what I can tell, reconstructing the mount seems to be the easier path to fixing this issue. Would probably find a 240 donor for forward and rear mounting pieces. If there are other things to recommend, I am all ears.

I would definitely try and get parts 44 and 43 from a donor car and weld them into the frame. The metal looks pretty tired next the tear site. You would want to cut it back until it fresh and patch in there.

Those parts can probably be sourced from any 240, they look similar enough.

Its a weld in part not a bolt in part but with a grinder and a welder... it can be replaced.

Even though the parts diagram shows a bolt, on my 1971 the bracket is definitely welded in place - at least at the outside attachment point. When we did the resto on my 1971 the bracket did not come off the car when the bottom was repainted.

Given the hassle of finding a donor car and then getting under it and disassembling stuff to access the bracket so that it can be cut off I might be tempted to get something like some 2" box section steel to see if I could fabricate a new piece that could be welded on to what remains of the original attachment points.

Starting with chassis number 393950 for the 142, Volvo changed the body side sway bar bracket to be incorporated into a rear crossmember. Volvo updated the part number twice and it's the same as the later 164 and all 240/260 Volvos so if you have the tools and the time there are plenty of used ones out there..

Skandix shows new ones as special order, but they want 200.Euro plus shipping.

Appreciate the responses on getting this issue fixed. Not sure if it will be finding a 240 donor or the 142 guy suggestion of a DIY fix with box section steel, but at least have some options.

I can confirm the panhard itself is swappable at least, have one from a 264 in the 140. Don't recall seeing that bracket bolted on though so yeah, probably a weld-in replacement is in your future.

Very much so not the case. The 240 panhard rod is a few inches longer

Intriguing since I only cut about 2" out when I made it adjustable. I did compare the two side by side and they were the same, prior to cutting though.
