1975 Volvo C304 - What did you do to your apartment today?

So now that Davis 2026 is in the books I think it’s about time I get around to making a build thread for the newest Volvo in the fleet. After 3+ years of consistent searching I have acquired the final vehicle in the trifecta of impracticality that is now my driveway. A 1975 Volvo C304

01-The-Fleet.jpg

Little backstory just for the fun of writing it and context on why one would purchase such a silly thing. In 2022 I acquired a Toyota Chinook camper truck and absolutely loved it, super fun project, filled in some gaps in housing after college and allowed me to access the vagabond lifestyle without having to sleep in a 245 anymore.

02-Chinook.jpg

Only issue (besides the fact it was a massive POS) is that it wasn’t a Volvo. I had pipe dreams of cab swapping it with a cut up 240 but never had the space or time to tear it apart so naturally replacing it with a Volvo camper option was always in my mind.

Fast forward to September 2025, I’m sleeping under a tarp taped to an S54 swapped E30 on a forest service road in Wyoming and checking for any available C303,C304,C306 listings as I do every night and what do you know there is a longbody up for sale in Washington.

At this point I had just moved to Oregon, spent about two years saving every cent and could swing my portion of the downpayment on a starter home if staying for at least 6 years was likely. Then if I keep working every day for the next 30 years I’d own the home my broken body would reside in, maybe a decade or so later I could have saved enough to buy an RV to finally hobble around what’s left of the natural world by the 2060’s…

Nah fuck that, bought the C304 and now I have a studio apartment that can be parked anywhere.

Picked up at the Burlington Airporter Shuttle depot and drove back to Bend, one of the few vehicles I’ve had that didn’t need dragged home. This thing is SLOW, a 7.5 hour drive took 2 days, but obviously I also fucked around the whole time.

The original plan was to register it in Oregon and immediately drive it to SLORolling, yeah DMV said no. Long story short 8 trips to 5 agencies in 3 states and it’s got plates. Since then it’s done about 8000km of idiotic stuff and only ever overheated like 7 times!

Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system here is some info on the thing!
1975 C304 (TGB131a), originally a Swedish military vehicle until being retired in 2000, shortly after it was imported to the US for the previous owner.

This poor thing is powered by a detuned B30a, making a whopping 117hp and attempting to move a 7000lb vehicle! Dual Strombergs and an A cam means this thing struggles on hills like it’s barely breathing (more on that later)!

16-Engine-Setup.jpg17-Onthescales.jpg18-weight.jpg

4 speed manual ZF S4-18 gearbox coupled to FD51 transfer case, low range is manually controlled with the linkage off the main shifter but the front diff is engaged with the same vacuum actuators that lock all three diffs.

19-Transfer-Case.jpg

That’s right not only does it have three diffs but they all lock! Imagine what it would take to get all 6 wheels stuck….oh wait

– Video stuck in snow –

Last but not least all three axles have portals, dropping the gearing and raising the lowest point (diff housing) even higher off the ground.

So far it's far and away the nicest vehicle I’ve ever owned, but it does indeed have some issues. Big one so far is the tendency to overheat under heavy load (flooring it up a mountain and whatnot). As of now it just pukes coolant out and you gotta let it sit but maybe I should look into that? This then leads to heatsoak, on warm restarts after it sits you gotta crank it more than 240240 on his lunch break. The lack of power leaves a lot to be desired, god damn does it suck shifting into second to get up hills! Three things effect this, first it made 117hp 50 years ago so it’s going to be slow as shit anyways. The previous owner swapped in 38” tires in place of the original 34” ones, this helps with top speed but throws off the gearing otherwise. Lastly the timing was set to 7 ATDC for the first 7000km I drove it because I was too lazy to get out the “timing light”!

That leads to what I’ve done to it….not much it’s kinda not that broken?

CV boot on the passenger side was pissing fluid all down highway 101 so I swapped that out after Davis, checked the drivers side just to find it was torn clean in half too. Swapped out but I’ll have to acquire spares again. Won some oil filters in the raffle so it got an oil change too.

Added a badge up front so you could tell it was a volvo, then had help making a custom grill with a sash just before Davis!

Plans from here on out? Build up the interior more (PO did walls and insulation along with a bed setup and slideout, I’d love to add a kitchenette, solar and electrical, better heater setup, more storage etc).
Next up is paint it, the camo is not my vibe it doesn’t have to look like I’m invading the place when I roll up. Color selection you say, well we do need more (ROSE) BIEGE of course!
Finally for the foreseeable future it still needs more power, B30 just isn’t going to cut it for how often I want to do stupid shit. I love a 5 cylinder and wish the diesel whiteblocks existed in the US but no dice so I’ll just have to find something else….

On that note it seems like I've got most of a D5244t making 160ps and 340nm, it seems that power levels closer to some of the later engines is pretty possible with a tune. I've got a lot of looking into it to do so if anyone from Europe familiar with these engines stumbles across the thread let me know.

The white roof is a good look, I'm pretty hyped on this color combo. AI stole my trim though I'm livid

I've had those downloaded for several years, just in case the site went down. I'm going to have to either resist the urge to buy physically manuals if they ever pop up or build a bookshelf in the bedroom.

Making the thread inspired me to finally pick up a hitch basket, been on the to do list for a while. I'll probably add some support bars to the side as the idea is to be able to haul engines (EJ25 unfortunately damn Subarus) and install on site. Crackpipe bumper crane seems like the next step.

Checking out a roof rack tomorrow, if not building one with the Junkman to match his Land Rover.

Kool! I remember when you swung by and picked up that tranny on the way home after purchasing it at Ye Old Jim Fisher Volvo estate!

The kid loved it!

I gotta Chevy 1960 c60 military bus myself! Small Block chevy 350 with 420 four speed! Optional independent front suspension. Six foot six headroom! Solar system, freezer, fridge, wood stove, 32 inch tv, surround sound.

Your c60 setup is pretty sweet, definitely got me hyped on the solar setup. Thanks for not spoiling the new ride, that was day of purchase. Can't quite stand up in mine but that thing is down right a whole house.

ads to what I’ve done to it….not much it’

I remember being on the phone with you, and hearing you say he was pulling up in "some unimog looking thing" and I was confused as hell, then when I asked Jimmy later he just said, "I was in a Volvo" to hide what he was driving

Engine itself is mostly there, missing the inlet camshaft, gear, covers and whatnot. I didn't get a chance to pull the cover and see if I'll need lifters/rockers or anything for that side. Missing one glowplug, obviously all the injectors, pipes, rail, and injection pump as well. I'll have to wrangle those bits along with a harness and ecu. I'll probably spend more piecing these bits together than I would finding an OM603 (most popular diesel swap for these things) but I'd much prefer another 5 cylinder Volvo powered ride.

Wow, that is awesome, and amazing you found a modern Volvo diesel to put into it! I've always wanted one of these, but would probably go with a unimog instead, just because it makes a lot more sense to have a diesel in something like this.
