I just grabbed this 78 242 GT that has a 88 740T engine and 4 speed that seems to have been set up pretty well. Issue I'm having is when i shift into neutral the RPM dips to about 400rpm feels like it is going to stall and then bounces back to 1000 rpm and idles fine. I do typically get a belt screech when it bounces back not sure if thats unrelated or a sign of something. If anyone has experience with this or similar problem I would appreciate any help.

The idle dip is usually something like a vacuum leak. It can also be a dirty or maladjusted throttle body. Probably a good idea to make sure the base timing is correct as well.

I'm guessing you're in the PacNW? If it's the 242 that was in Bellingham, WA, I know one of the previous owners. At the time he owned it, it had a B21FT/M46 combo installed. He is a retired Volvo CMT. Might be willing to look at it and see what's going on.

1988 used lh 2.2. I'd have to look at a wiring diagram, but the idle dip may be because you have no speed signal from the rear.
