2016 XC70 Whistle (PCV?)

My 2016 XC70, 2.5l 5cyl, has about 150k on it. It has developed a whistling noise from what sounds like the R/Front. I have searched the forums for 'Whistling', 'Whistle', and 'XC70 PCV' (I thought that I had read about the PCV system causing a whistling somewhere).

I was wondering if:

Anyone else has had this problem?

If it is a realistic driveway fix?

Will I hurt anything (blowing out a rear main seal, etc) by continuing to drive it until the spring weather gets nice?

Is there anything else I should know or have asked about?

As always, thanks in advance for any help or funny posts!

When the whistle happens, remove the oil cap. If the noise goes away with the cap removed - you need to replace the oilfitler/pcv housing.

Yes, it will cause damage. You will likely get cam seal leaks if you don't change the box quickly.

If you're handy, yes you can change it in the drive way with hand tools and lifting the car up a bit to remove the belly pan. You'll need to catch a little leaking oil also.

Thank you so very much for the help!

[ EDIT ]
When I removed the cap, there was a definite change in pitch and volume. So, I'm going to change out the housing.
[ /EDIT ]

I kinda need the car for work this week. If the whistle does stop with the oil cap off can I pull out, maybe just slightly, the oil dipstick to relieve the crankcase pressure (in order to reduce the chance of blowing out a seal)? I know that the repair needs to be done, I'm just trying to buy some time until next weekend.

Also, there are times that it is worth it to buy repair parts directly from Volvo. Is this one of those times? Or, maybe, are there any preferred aftermarket brands? I'd like for this car and repair to last as long as possible.

I would buy that part from Volvo. I"m unsure if it is even available aftermarket, but it is fairly critical to not pushing out seals, I'd spend the extra (and life time warranty).

If it just started, you'll likely make it through the week. You can pull the dipstick, but it will set a lean code. Just be ready to clear it.

Thanks for your time and detailed responses.

I bought the oil filter housing, the house that runs near it (the guy at the parts counter said that they change them while they are in there), and even 2 clamps (I was there, why not?).

Total cost $347. I asked for an oil filter, but was told that one is already in there. So, I bought a 6 pack of Mobil 1 5w-30 high mileage (155k) and ended up bringing it to my trusted local shop as I have to much going on this weekend to get to working on it myself 😞

Ugh, they finished installing the breather box and hose, but now it has a code for a misfire in every cylinder, a lean code, and a rich code.

They are rechecking everything now

Well that is excessive. Wonder if they A: didn't connect a hose properly or B: Pinched some wiring under the spark plug cover

I'm not sure what they did. The mechanic said that he had disconnected four connectors, and that all four were plugged back in. He got another mechanic who came out with a better scanner and after many attempts (with some peeking / fiddling under the hood), the light was off and it runs perfect again.

Again, thank you for all your expertise, time, and help.
