22t, laggy? Can't find any info on them...

Going bigger then a 19t you’re better off going for something else. i like my 20t and made 330whp pretty much maxxed out on my ported big valve 531 head. But it lights up like a candle after some spirited road driving. So it won’t be in there much longer.
Doubt it maxed it out. I have friends on 530 heads ported with 46/38mm valves making north of 400. More likely your TD04 got maxed out.
 
There are pretty good turbine housings out there for T3 turbos. I am using the Cossie Sierra .48 housing on a B21FT. It's still not as fast a spool as misterbitchi but it made the response better at low rpms. Full boost is still around 3k though. ATP turbo sells a larger turbine housing in that same cosworth style to make more power.
 
Or buy a borgwarner SX-E with divided housing for half the price.

Wasn't turbobricks supposed to be about making these grandpa vehicles as fast as possible for the least amount of money?

Sort of changes when racing, but yes. Sucks when you DNF a rally race that has $2-4k invested by the time you tow there and back and spend a weekend out in the woods breaking stuff. So we tend to spend where it counts, stock turbos seem to last about 5 events before needing a rebuild when pushing boost and revs.

The GTX turbo has been bullet proof in …. 7 years of racing without any turbo related issues. Though admittedly less racing has happened than usual, so maybe 15-20 rallies since the turbo was installed.
 
Just get a K24 from a S60R/V70R. It's sized right the power you are looking for. They are a few hundred dollars and will pretty much last forever because it's a borg warner.
