240-style head "dizzy plug / seal" not sealing?

Howdy folks,

We don't seem to be able to get the 240-style seal which goes in place of the dizzy on a 530/531 (which doesn't use a dizzy) to stop throwing oil out for a living.

Is it a consumable...i.e. is a replacement likely to make the problem go away? Is it a fitment issue?

Any advice? It seems so simple, but we're not having any joy. They barely ever leak on 240s, so I don't see what the problem is.

cheers

Could be a bad seal. Could be the crankcase ventilation system is plugged causing pressure build up, and its blowing oil from the weakest seal. IPD sells a plate to cover the seal to prevent it from being blown out.

IPD's part is good. I have it. Use some RTV silicone on it. I used the same plug for about 5 cam shaft installs on my head, and use RTV and its never leaked a drop. But yes, if its puking the stuff look at your PCV.

When you install the seal. Remove the number five bearing cap and install it in that manner. That'll get the seal into it's location. Then I'd also use that cover plate that you can either buy from IPD or make one. Be sure you aren't making too much crankcase pressure.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

The engine in question is used with up to 30psi of boost, so I think that is the 'source', rather than the PCV (which is clean, as far as I'm concerned).

Dave - that's exactly how I installed it.

RTV...that's certainly worth a shot. I use it on the #1 bearing cap edges. I think we might have used Hylomar blue instead of RTV on it when it was put in.

I haven't seen it lately, but my understanding is that it's leaking...a lot! It's partly covered up by a plate (which I guess would perform a similar function to the iPd one, if only it covered the whole of the cap!) with gasket paper between it and the head. The plate's primary function is to support a coil pack...

I think RTV is a good place to start.

Just an update. I've just ordered the ipd plate (with Cameron's help) so I am planning to fit that under the current L bracket. We may remove the seal again and use some rtv on it to make sure.

The PCV was fully cleaned out last spring and the car has only covered about 400-450 miles since then.

I'll keep you informed once the plate arrives.

How's the PCV set up on your car, Ryan?

Dunno how much blowby you get if any, but at 30psi it may be an idea to stick another outlet with some nice big bore hose on the side of your breather box, stealthfti style.

All it has is the standard breather box, with the pipe disappearing into a chassis rail. For the 360, I'm intending to put additional breather holes where the mechanical fuel pump used to attached on carb models and in the cam cover...all routed into a breather box...and I imagine a similar scheme on the 740 would be a good idea.

cheers
