92 Volvo 240 engine chaos- What is this spring from my oil pan? What happened here?

Hello everyone. This is my first forum post on this.

I have a 1992 Volvo 240 wagon with a b230f and m47 manual trans. This thing only has 100k miles and the ODO does seem to work. (Unless maybe this engine was swapped)

I just bought it. The engine had a horrible misfire before I bought it, and I figured I’d fix it no problem. long story short I narrowed it to a stuck injector, got it unstuck, and it seemed to run very well. I drove it 2 times relatively short distances and it ran great. Randomly, I went to pull it out of my garage and it sounded horrible. Went through a couple of fundamental checks and then went straight to compression checking to save time wasting.

From front to back- 180-180-0-80

I took the valve cover off and instantly saw valves stuck when turning hand.

Next, I did a leak down test. First 2 cylinders had about 19% leak down. (Not ideal or great but acceptable). These 2 were most notably leaking to the crank case. Maybe rings. But nothing overly alarming. The back 2 had 85% leak down. Back cylinder (80psi compression one) had a leak in the exhaust valve. The 3rd cylinder in front of it with 0 psi was leaking from both the exhaust and intake valve.

I pulled the head, and the pistons didn’t look horrible. The valve were covered in carbon, but I didn’t think a big deal of it. The back piston looks like it may have got hot, but that was the one where the injector was stuck so it washed a lot of the carbon. (Pictures will be added). The walls didn’t look bad either.

Now, I figured “okay, I’ll just do a valve job and be good to go”. I decided to drain the oil and check just to make sure and found tons of metal flakes and these unknown springs.

I’ve read that these could be the oil pump relief valve spring but I’m not fully sure. It’s clearly too small to be a valve spring or anything. I’m really lost as to what happened here. The 240 ran very well and then just seemed to grenade. Would the oil pressure relief valve giving out cause these valves to stick and lead to this whole compression loss disaster?

Please let me know your thoughts. Anything is appreciated. I know valves stuck make sense for sitting a long time, but all this metal and stuff blowing up doesn’t seem like typical issues for these engines, especially with 100k, even with sitting a long time. I am not sure what happened here.

edit- its also clear that there was tons of stop leak in this engine. There coolant jackets are clearly plugged, and when i took the head bolts on there were flakes of metal. It didnt look like it took the threads out from the head. to me, it looked like that metal material some stop leak stuff causes.

Looks about like the metal springs on some of the seals (rear main, front main, cam, int shaft).
That is very possible. Do you think that would leak to all this other metal on my drain plug too? Given that springs may have been all grinded up?

Im guessing a possible cause of this could have been extreme crank case pressure and then it blew everything out. But, when I had it running, there was no major blow by at all. What do you think causes this? and would all this other metal make sense?

I also thought the springs were too small to be the oil pump relief valve spring.

The chunks look like flakes of rusty cast iron, but I can't tell.

Either way, that block is dead. You will never get all that metal out. Time for a replacement engine.

I don't believe these piston rings use a spring style. Also, during my leak down test, none of them had a major leak in the crankcase. But then again, most of the pressure was going out the valve, so it would be hard to tell.

I was hoping that most of the metal was from this spring, but I'm starting to think it's unlikely, sadly.

So you think it's toast? I was thinking about doing a valve job and slapping it back together and hoping for the best, but now im not so confident about that, given the metal.

I think they are right. It does seem like it's from a seal. Not sure if it's a current seal or an old one. Ill have to look further into it, but at this point im not sure if its even worth it.

Sad situation.

That piece left of the spring is definitely alarming.. sigh..
 
Pull the oil pan, unbolt the rods and pop the pistons out. We wanna see that carnage!
Yeah of course, pulling the pans on these things are not fun at all. I just inpected some of that metal some more. Those pieces to the left of the spring appear to be copper/gold. So my guess is bearing material? right?

I am just so lost and shocked as to how this engine ran fantastic and then randomly i started it and it ran horrible, and now i see this. It doesn't make sense to me.
 
The killer of any engine is lack of oil or coolant. These engines burn oil and people drive em and don't check their oil level or do routine oil changes which causes engine failure. I didn't even know how to open the hood when I first started driving a brick.

I guess you could try the old "pour ATF into the cylinders and come back in the morning and see if there is any left"

I personally wouldn't waste my time on that block.

Yeah, but like i said: i drove this thing without issues 2 times before pulling it out of my garage before it gave out. The oil was full, i checked everything prior to running it down the road. From me, it got no harsh driving for the week i messed with it. Maybe it was on its way out due to lack of maintenance from the previous people and just happened to end it all in my hands.

Given all the stop leak in the cooling jackets, that might be the answer here. I bet it was overheated too many times. The guage never overheated in my hands, but these guages also barely work so....
 
The coolant passages are all rusted out. Which means the previous owner was just adding water. It also looks like those rear passages are clogged shut.

I agree. This is what i thought. Also, the rad is leaking, so it would make sense they used water and it prob cracked when freezing. And im pretty sure they used stop leak because these jackets are plugged solid as you stated. What a mess. This is so sad for an Volvo with 100k.
 
I missed the part about them sticking. Blow out the coolant passages and slap a used head on it? Or full machine shop rebuild, or buy a complete motor.
