93 240 Pickup Project Ruby

Had a friend of the Mrs. visiting from Maine offer to help me with outside work today - so I got her to help me dig out under the porch where the critters were getting into the crawlspace at some point in the past. I lent her my Volvo coveralls

Someone broke the foundation to run this pipe (god knows what it was for) - and never refitted the foundation stones
index.php

Cleaned out the rubble, refitted the stones that had been dislodged & mortared the joints
index.php

also put a new house number sign on the side driveway -
index.php

If my rx-7 calipers ever crap out on me I'm gonna have to go for those. They look really nice, and they're still available, which is nice.

Melty EFI relay on the 81 GLT
index.php

Cut the harness, new terminals & housing
index.php

index.php

Resolder the relay, along with his spare
index.php

The 81 GLT I've been working on
index.php

Cleaned up (power washed & vacuumed) a spare cargo floor panel set without the 3rd seat
index.php

Pulled a rear seat catch from a 86 parts car - the housing is broken but not the release, so I transferred that to mine
index.php

index.php

Lever transferred to my housing, reassembled

Installed strut braces

Cut up the Volvo manual antenna (NLA) so I could make an adaptor to use an aftermarket mast I have. The aluminum barrel with the threaded end I cut down from the aftermarket, to fit inside the Volvo housing The resin piece is the Volvo inner cut down to mate with the replacement section
index.php

Dismantled the cluster, and the speedo head to replace the odometer drive gear
index.php

Now it works
index.php

Trimmed & painted the new front back plates in preparation for the new Brembo brakes
index.php

Car was dead this morning- the frost killed the battery, which was at least 15 years old(!) Thankfully I had the jumper pack when I left my chiropractor.
index.php

Went & got a new Interstate battery - since this is the correct form factor for the car, I was able to put back the proper tray & retainer clip, and move the fuse panel to the top of the battery
index.php

So, what did they charge for the MT-47 that you now have in the 245? Need to replace mine (was a refurb Interstate from 2019 that's at 12.4 volts when the key's off) with something newer.

Not bad on the battery price. Was looking at their website and they wanted something like $475 for the same battery.

Almost twins. I think I'd go ahead and delete the rack on the '93. Are those the same rims from your black 245 on Matt's '78?

I was expecting it to be somewhat more. I bought it from Ithaca foreign car, I don't have a working relationship with a garage up here as I did downstate so I was expecting a couple hundred.
The roof rack will go away. I do have the ipd plugs for now.
Pretty sure they are the same MSWs that I used back in the '80s on my 245

Too cold & wet to work outside, so I'm making room to work inside
index.php

Removing the roof rack & wellnuts, clean up & rust proofing the holes
index.php

Cleaned up a wall in the barn, removed fiber board that was a massive squirrel nest, and the shelving also covered in squirrel mess. I'm moving a set of timber shelves downstairs to make a tire rack

Good updates, per usual!
I wasn't a fan of the commando bumpers at first, but they've grown on me and are suiting your car very well.
Are you using the IPD plug kit for the roof?

Yes, I did use the IPD roof rack hole plugs - these will do until the pickup happens

Also got the larger front brakes on
Brembo calipers meant for a GM, Brembo/Volvo rotors meant for a S60 (09863311 - 11.25"x26mm) adaptor brackets and lines from BNE Dynamics. Wagner MX1379 pads from RockAuto (cheap)
index.php

Reshaped the brake lines to the rearward bracket port -
index.php

ABS sensor harness secured
index.php

3/16" spacer needed to clear with the Volvo 16" Hydra

Alternator took a dump this week - fortunately we were not far from home. Got a new unit from RockAuto - 100A WAI Global 13235N. I've had good luck with this brand before, and it's a little less than a 80A Bosch reman.

index.php

Fan blade has no protection.
index.php

Idle voltage, with lights & blower running.
index.php

This may be the only issue with the previous aftermarket reman - looks like no connectivity on the (not Bosch) regulator spring contact. Not worth bothering with, IMO.
index.php

Had to redo the Continental (10x920) alternator belts today - they were squealing like crazy & had worn thin - in only a few months
Since I had to take stuff apart, I decided to get rid of the stock fan clutch and shroud & install the eFan & relay from a Volvo 960. They use a much wider rad, so I had to cut the shroud down to 18" width, and notch the upper left and lower corners to clear the lower rad mount cushions. The stock shroud lower tabs had to also be cut off, so I added angle brackets to keep the base tucked against the rad.

Added the same BMW fan switch I used in the X1/9 to control the Volvo relay 2 fan speed grounds

Also put on a shorter AC belt - 13x950 (listed for the 740)- vs. the 13x975 designated for the 240 - with the longer belt I had no further adjustment, and the AC lines were up against the intake bellows
index.php

Nice fan conversion.... that 960 fan just about swallows up that 2 series radiator. What temp set points does the BMW contacts close at, presumably low and high?

I ran some Conti belts for a while, and they were crap. I run now OE belts (if you can find them) and real GATES.
