940 brake upgrade options under 16" wheels (Hydra)

Hi all.

While looking around for brake upgrade options I came across the following common options:

- Conversion to 330mm V70R/S60R brakes, which will fit under (most) 17" and larger wheels
- Conversion to 302mm V70 brakes, which will fit under (most) 16" and larger wheels.

I'd prefer to keep the 16" Hyrdas on my car (I like the look), so I'm wondering if the latter approach (302mm disks) would fit under these wheels?

Has anyone got experience with these conversions?

Looking at this post and this one makes it seem rather straight forward, while this guy needed to shave down the calipers to clear his 16" wheels.

Alternatively, are there some good disk/pad options when keeping the stock brakes?

I have installed 302mm brakes on my car (740) with no issues mounting the hydras. project is not finnished, so no road test yet. I think it depends on the wheels, different 16" wheels will have different clearances.

Moving from a 240 to a 940, I'm rather impressed how good the stock brakes are on the latter. Stock brakes should be fine for your daily occasional street drift driver in 9/10 circumstances.

Things probably change a bit if you want to hit the race track.

No, I don't need anything over stock. But this is a hobby / project car, so we do unnecessary things sometimes.
If you want to improve pedal feel, look into swapping the brake booster and pedal assembly from a 95+ 940. It has a better ratio so there's less pedal travel and it'll feel more like a modern car.

This. Also fresh brake fluid, stainless braided brake hoses, better pads (greenstuff) and "sport" discs helped a lot even with the 95+ booster. I can´t say how well these affect brake feel individually, but going from old "oe-quality" to this made a nice difference both on the street and on shorter track sessions.

I have not had a problem with the stock 740 dual inlet, dual piston brakes other that they are harder to bleed and there is not a good selection of pads. My custom made front race pads can out brake a lot of other cars on the racetrack. I would love to move to Wilwoods or similar for a better selection of off the shelf pads.

Maybe if there was a group buy for 7/9 Wilwood kits...

Do you actually need more brake? The 940 brakes aren't small
280mm...small by today's standards...I guess, so are the 7/9 series cars. That being said, modern cars that size/weight have bigger brakes/wheels/tires that the original 7/9s...
Unless you're overheating stock brakes, it seems counterproductive to add more rotating mass and unsprung weight
The difference in rotating mass and unsprung weight between the 280mm and 302mm is negligible...he won't even notice the difference, except he'll have better feel, and be able to stop better (assuming adequate tires to improve stopping distance).

There will be more disc/pad options with the 302mm, because you'll essentially be looking for P80 front brakes...Everyone has their own opinions on what disc/pad combo is best. Personally, I like EBC pads, the Reds stop well with decently low dust. I'm currently running the Yellows on my DD, which are listed as a "race" pad...I would categorize them as a very aggressive street pad. They dust like mad, but they stop like the car is tied to a tree...just some good wholesome family fun...

My 940 has no problem activating ABS with stock sized Michelin Pilot Sports, OEM brakes and ceramic pads from 60 mph

It's almost as if the car was engineered with properly sized brakes....

Same with a 240, but I've also gotten 240 brakes so hot at a track day to melt the seals out of the front calipers.
Bigger brakes and better cooling do have their place.

This is the only forum I know of that will talk people out of modifications on their cars. We are becoming more and more Brickboard by the day :ROFLMAO:
speak for yourself. Ive been brickboarding restore it to stock since the beginning
