940 window regulator woes

So I lent my 940 to my buddy because his Nissan maxima battery exploded

I told him the three rules
1- Let the car warm up until piston slap goes away before you drive it
2- park in neutral and not park cuz the shifter is messed up
3- DO NOT ROLL THE DRIVERS WINDOW DOWN

-Being the start of Houston summer, guess what the first thing he did was... the regulator only rolls down, and not up (for some reason)
-He comes over to replace his battery the next day and he tells me he cant get the window up
-Oh well, I'm sure we can pull upwards on it to close it, because that's what I've been doing every time someone rolls it down
-We start tugging while playing with the switch and the window freaking flies off the regulator and becomes loose in the door.

I pulled the door panel off and I noticed that both of the blue plastic things that connect the window to the regulator were still on the slidey bits of the window and not attached to the regulator. the window was not damaged tho so that's a plus.

Am I screwed? I haven't seen a regulator for sale anywhere under $180... Is there a temporary way I can hold the window up securely? Its kinda just taped right now and that's not great... Does anyone know if the regulator is refurbishable, or IF I can find a cheap one somewhere? any pointers are appreciated.

I cant be mad at my buddy, I need someone to help me take my m46 out next week :rofl:
 
I'm pretty sure you can get those clips replaced if they aren't reusable. Oftentimes the problems with these not going back up isn't even the regulator, it's the grease in the gearbox affixed to the motor will dry up and cause too much resistance on the motor causing it to jam up.

I would try first to pull the motor off and go part by part, with the window off you should be able to manipulate the reg provided it wasn't bent in the accident. Then you can sort-of go piece by piece till you find whatever's binding, plonk the window back on the reg with new clips and send. Otherwise I'd probably go to a JY or ask on the wanted here for a new system - someone very likely has one.

thanks, good to know. I shall figure out how the regulator assembly comes out and take it apart. Hoping for the best..
 
It sounds to me like the plastic sliders broke. There is a clip the secures the slider to the regulator. It looks like a large. thick bobby pin. If the motor goes in one direction, it will also work in the opposite direction. You might have a broken wire going from the switch to the motor. Put power directly to the motor and see if the regulator works in both directions. You just reverse polarity to make it go the opposite direction.
 
Keep in mind that it could be something simple like dirt in the switch that's keeping the window from going up. It's a known problem area. One hunk of grunge on one little internal contact will cause your symptoms. The driver window is the most used, so the worst switch for getting dirt in it and also the worst for contact pitting and wear. And of course it's the only power window without a second switch to try. You can try using jumpers to force the window to run (polarity determines the direction of the motor), but the simplest way to test it is to simply swap in one of the other driver door switches (not a switch from a passenger door).

These switches can often be resurrected by opening them up for a cleaning and light contact polishing (pry the side tabs carefully out a little, keep right side up, open slowly, spring loaded parts can fly all over, note the contact bars orientation). A temporary or even semi-permanent fix is to swap it with the neighboring front passenger window switch and force the front passenger to always have to use their own switch. If you ever replace a window switch or swap it with one of the others, note that the switches used in the three passenger doors are different from the four switches in the driver door pod as there's no pin 3, but rather an internal jumper in the driver door switches. You can't use a driver door switch in any of the other doors, but you can use a switch from any passenger door in the driver door if you add an external jumper between pins 3 and 5. Why Volvo made two different switches when one switch design would easily have sufficed for everything if they'd simply added one wire for the connector has always been beyond me. If you remove a switch from any passenger door, that window will no longer work unless you replace it with jumper wires.

In the 940s, the front window switches in the driver pod have a built in indicator lamp, while the two rear switches in that pod do not. Apart from the light, they're otherwise identical and the same switches as the ones used in 740s without the lamp. The RF passenger door switch is also the only passenger switch to have its own power. All the other doors get their power through the driver door. If the RF passenger door switch works and none of the other switches do then it's almost always a broken wire at the driver door hinge area.

A number of window parts are still available from Volvo (check the web link below for what's currently available). Larger body shops who do insurance claims may also be worth talking to as these plastic clips might get broken during forced entry. You can use the following diagram and lookup the part numbers when dealing with wreckers and used parts suppliers.
