ABS/TRACS illuminated - V70 T5

What year? Has there been a lot of snow and crap around?

My 2001 v70 did this about a month ago, and it turned out that snow and crap got jammed up in the wheel sensor, and a little donut action with lots of brake lockup broke the crap free. Everything has been fine and the lights have turned off.

Year is 1997 mileage 99K - full Volvo service history

Wheel sensors are squeeky clean.
Control unit was removed when lights were first on.
Some condensation - dried out and refitted - lights went out after a few miles.
Several hundred later - lights back on.
Main agents have since diagnosed a fault in the pump motor

Now an aged, but much appreciated set of wheels, I am bound to question any significant expense for a single part - so any advice welcome.

If the light has been comong on and off and the codes don't all point to the same fault each time, I'd say it's a bad control unit. It's very common on those cars, and unfortunately, it's expensive.

If you don't need the abs, just take the light out of the dash to keep from having to look at it.

ABS tracs

This fault is very common on the 850/V-S70 cars. There are several people out there that specialize in rebuilding them as the fix is apparently just the resoldering of the circuit board and replacement of some components for more tolerant examples.
Do a search over at Volvospeed for the ABS TRACS repair guys. My father has sent two of his to Victor in California. He has a pretty fast turnaround time and is about half as much as purchasing a new control unit. Isle of Wight might be a bit far to ship, but apparently the car can be driven with the control unit removed for repair. I believe the guys website has instructions on removal and sending.
So far my dads 97 AWD 850 manual, my mothers 98 V70 XC and my sisters 98 S70-T5SE have all had their ABS/TRACS control units replaced in the last year. Word on the street is that there are 2 types of 850/V-S70s out there, Ones with the ABS tracs control unit replaced/fixed and those that will very soon!.

crossing my fingers that the previous owner of my 98 V70R had the ABS/Tracs replaced before I bought it!

ABS and TRACS not functioning but brakes perform fine.
Is there a quick fix for these v expensive units or cheaper options ?

My roommate's '97 850 GLT (Basically the same car) does this too, aparently it's common. I don't know much about it, but he said there was some helpful info on Volvospeed.

Thanks for advice - got some useful info.

However - has anyone out there tackled VOLVO - this unit would seem to be flawed - I did contact them to see if I had missed a recall - they were very keen to know EXACT details before advising me no.

The demand for these units is excessive - some discounted and recycle suppliers in the UK have sold the lot!

Seeking redress

There probrably should have been a recall, but there was none. We're stuck having to keep buying new ones, as even the replacements fail.

Have you seriously seen replacements fail? In my 3ish years at the dealer, and the hundreds(?) that we've put in, I've yet to see a repeat failure. Admitedly, we're not that big....
