Amazon Wagon #2, Electric Bluegaloo

Well, with the sale of my '63 rustbucket wagon, I was not really sure when/if I'd find another Amazon project. I really liked the car, but it was just too much of a project to chew with the time I have available at the moment. I sold that off to a buddy with most all of my spares.

He picked that up about 3 weeks ago, and I replaced it with a '70 C10.

Or so I thought.

About a week and a half ago, @stick70 forwarded me a Marketplace listing for a blue '66 wagon in central Georgia. It looked pretty solid from the few pictures on the ad, so I sent out a message but didn't hear back. After about 12 hours. I just assumed the car was already gone.

Then I got a reply back that was just a phone number, so I called immediately. Apparently the guy had been swamped with interest, but I was the first to call. My only question was "Can I pick it up Friday?" and he said yes. I called in a favor from @Wren and since he was reasonably close, he dropped what he was doing and went and paid the man for me.

The next day Gordon and I hitched up my dolly behind the 240 and pointed it South. After a quick stop at Waffle House and a meetup with Wren to trade cash for keys, then it was on to the seller's house to pick it up.

The exterior is pretty good. Really not any huge amount of visible rust, the body panels are remarkably straight, it's a decent looking car really.

Interior is a bit worse for wear for sure, but that's expected after nearly 60 years.

And under the hood is the expected B18.

The underside of the car is remarkably solid. There's about a 6" section of frame channel that'll need to be patched, but apart from that it's so, so, so much less rusty than the last one.

So spare wheels with rally tires on the back, down off the jacks and onto the dolly and STOOOPPPP dammit. Dude helped us load it, but got a little too excited and pulled it off the front. Luckily, nothing really got hurt and after another half hour of shuffling, we finally go the dolly out from underneath.

Then we got a little tour of the guy's collection:

The rest of the trip home was uneventful

And got pushed into the shop

Once I got it home, I threw a battery and some fuel at it to see what would happen and...

I haven't even unpacked the car yet, I have no idea what all was included with the sale, but I know for sure the bumpers (or some bumpers) are, a new windshield, and some other miscellaneous parts came with it. In order to drive this thing, I really just need a pair of brake calipers, the ones on the car are super seized, so the first project will be to try and get those freed up and rebuilt, but if I can't get them apart of if they're too far gone, I'll just buy new ones.

Anyhow, let's see how long this one sticks around.

Got the brakes torn down last night. One piston came out reasonably easy, the rest fought me. The two large pistons were the worst. I wound up welding a nut onto the old piston and hitting it with an M18 impact and a 24" breaker bar just to get the piston moving a bit.

I got the calipers mostly cleaned up last night. I need to clean the channels for the seals too, but my dremel is dead so I'll have to get another to use the brass brush on those.

I also drained the fuel tank last night for something to do. I thought it needed a fuel pump since it wasn't pumping while the car was running, but given that I only drained about a quart and a half of fuel out of the tank, it was probably just empty.

I've got a mileage reimbursement check coming in the next few days, I'll do a VP order then for enough stuff to hopefully get it moveable under its own power.

I finished up the front hubs the other day. I had 5 galled studs that needed to be replaced and the other 5 didn’t look super great, but at $5 each, that’s still $50.

I did some measuring and came up with Dorman 610-315 as a very close substitute. That’s actually a 240 stud, but I didn’t realize that til later. The local parts store had those in stock for $1.85/ea.

Rotors are turned, bearings are re-packed, and now I just need to get some parts ordered.

Finally got around to actually ordering the parts I need to make this thing mobile again. Really not too bad considering. High points are the brake rebuild kits, hoses, water pump, a few other odds and ends. It'll need an exhaust too, but that can wait a bit. I may also put a header on this one instead of using the stock exhaust, we'll see.

Long video on repacking/assembling hubs on account of the kiddo wanting to get involved, which is fun in itself.

After the high temp issues on the last Amazon, I decided to have this radiator professionally cleaned. The shop took care of it in a day for $120, they said they just boiled it out, and it passed a flow and pressure test so no need to take it apart to rod it, which is a pleasant surprise.

This one looks like a much better starting point, congrats! Is this going the rally route as well? Either way I'm excited to see what you make of it.

I'm sure this is obvious to anyone but me, but if you're header shopping I would very much not recommend the patriot b18/20 header. I grabbed it because a header at that price point was too tempting but the welds and thickness of the tubes did not spark joy. It also meant my generator no longer fit without replacement/modification.

Yeah, I used a Patriot header on my PV for a while, after finding it for around $75 on Amazon once. WTF? Too cheap to not give it a chance.

It did last a few years. But very thin metal, and the tubes were welded to the (thin)flange on the inside with blobby booger welds sticking into the exhaust flow. After a few years of brapping around the tubes started cracking off at the flange one by one. I tacked them on again, then it would crack again. Eventually I just bought a KGTrimning 4:2:1 header and that thing is solidly built, with bigger tubes (bigger is not always better, but in my case it was).

I’d like to use it as a course car at least a time or two, yeah, but I’m not making a rally car out of it.

I was really hoping to get some stuff done on the car this weekend but none of my parts showed up, oh well.

I did make a stop at Voluparts this past week on my way through Atlanta and picked up a bunch of miscellaneous stuff I needed, as well as this, which I don’t need but for the price I would’ve been insane to pass up on. I have the head gasket to go with it as well.

I've gotten a few things from Voluparts over the years. But I'd love to actually stop in and see what I could find. Can you actually just browse?

Kinda. You gotta get on Bill's good side first. He's a bit odd but in a cool way, just be weird back and he seems cool enough. It's mountains of stuff...I made a video, but idk if I'll post it or not, with my luck it would be my one that takes off and all of a sudden there'd be a line to get in.

Oh no no. No one needs to know about our hidden gem.

I got on Bills good side pretty quick once I started just dropping odd part numbers off the top of my head. He seems to open up pretty quickly once he realizes you are there to keep your old Volvo on the road. Also probably helped I showed up in my 245. I've gotten lost in the back pretty easily. Most of the rarer stuff has already been picked out by now, but every once in a while, you can still find some good stuff.

Boxes of maintenace parts have arrived while I was on the road in the first half of the week. Brake rebuild stuff, brake hoses, pads, center bearing, water pump, the list goes on. Won't be making any progress this weekend since I'll be at Sandblast Rally but I don't have travel plans next week, so hopefully I can get some stuff done in the evenings.
