Another Unwanted P2 XC70: 2001 Volvo V70 XC (XC70 tomato tomato)

Let's chat about the P2 XC70.

Since Volvo slightly improved the XC70 over the years, I think most people subconsciously split the P2 XC70 into these categories:

2001: RUN AWAY!!!
2002: PTSD from the 2001 cars.
2003-2004: Meh, might be a good car.
2005-2007: Hey, that's an alright car!

A quick Google search pulls up dozens of results for people complaining about early P2 XC70 ownership: suicidal transmissions, oil leaks, AWD problems, electrical problems, etc etc etc.
With poor consumer reviews and most folks favoring Subarus anyway, the early P2 XC70's are presented as a real bargain for idiots like me that are familiar with wrenching on them.

Last week, during my nightly routine of shopping for cars I don't need, I came across this 2003 XC70:


Cosmetically, not bad!
Engine issues could be a variety of things.
It's implied that the front struts are completely blown since new ones are included with the car. That probably means the rest of the suspension is tired, too.
If it needs a new battery, does it actually need a new one, or is there an electrical drain?
Either way, $650 seemed like a good deal.

After chatting with the seller for a few days, he was able to send me a video of the car idling, as well as a video of it accelerating with a cold engine from 0-65. The engine was obviously misfiring, but no knocks. Likewise, the transmission was shifting great and on-time. Perfect!

With that, I was pretty much sold. The car was in Ketchum (~4 hours away), so my wife and I packed the car for an overnight trip and set off to check it out.

Turns out, the car belonged to the Sun Valley Ski Foundation, where it was a loaner car for the Foundation's international coaches when they flew in for local ski resorts. Cosmetically, the car impressed me, and it fired up without needing a jump. I didn't even drive the car before purchasing. One bummer, however, was that the car not a 2003 like the ad said; it was actually a 2001, the year with one of the more questionable transmissions. Felt fine shifting, but I’ll need to keep an eye on it.

With an OBD2 scanner, I was able to determine that cylinder #3 wasn't firing at all, and the voltage regulator was having a seizure that seemed to cause some electrical oddities: flickering brake lights, brake failure warning, airbag failure warning, ABS failure, you name it. We decided it would be a better idea to drive the car one hour to a relative's house versus try and limp it four hours back to Boise, so that's what we did. On the way, we had to stop for a few minutes for some elk to cross:


Once the car was parked and safe, I gave it a quick inspection to determine what all it needed:
-Coil pack.
-Voltage regulator (battery may have been fine after all).
-All suspension.
-If the warning lights weren't associated with weird voltages, I have a rough road ahead of me.


I have some extra parts and tools now, so I'll be headed to Twin Falls to retrieve the car this weekend. Wish me luck!

Hi everyone,

Here’s an update on how things are going…

To address the car’s issues, I first visited my favorite place: the junkyard. It was 28F degrees and foggy, brrr!


I was able to find this 2005 XC70 that looked to be in decent shape. Looked like the airbag recall had already been done. Note the ice covering the car… again, brrrrr!!! On the car were a blend of Sylvania and Volvo coil packs, both with Bosch stamps. I grabbed one of each to play it safe. Unfortunately, all of the P2 alternators at the junkyard were in rough shape; looks like the power steering pump was dripping on all of them. Common issue?


For fun, I took a few pictures of this minivan:


Back down in Twin Falls, I swapped out Cylinder #3’s coil pack and saw a bunch of crud in the old one. Looked like dirty dielectric grease, but I could be mistaken. Anyway, with a new coil pack, the car idled smooth and quiet. After sitting for a week in freezing temperatures, the battery was fine, so I’m not worried about replacing it. I’ll still look into the alternator/voltage regulator, though. I topped off all the fluids and the car drove great to Boise, ~150 miles at 80mph.


Aside from the shocks and struts, the suspension surprisingly looks great. Ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, and CV axles all look like newer rubber… newer than 2001, anyway. Nothing’s perfect, but it’s no longer on my “replace this ASAP” list.


Had the tires inspected and they’re good for another 15,000-20,000 miles. Still have a lot of the manufacturing nubs on the sidewalls.
On December 30th, I’ll be headed to the Volvo dealership for my airbag recall.

A friend loaned their VIDA scanner, and we were able to see the car’s problems. Unsure if these have to do with the car’s varying voltages, but I guess we’ll see. Here are the codes:

Engine Control Module (ECM)
-3533 Misfire, faulty signal.
-530D Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in another control module.

Brake Control Module (BCM)
-0070 Pump failure. Faulty signal. Permanent/intermittent fault.
-0093 Control module communication.
-0064 Brake light switch. Intermittent signal.
-0092 Control module communication.
-0095 Control module communication.

SRS Airbag
-0128 Control unit. Internal fault. Intermittent or permanent.

Driver Information Module (DIM)
-E003 Configuration fault. Signal missing.

Central Electronic Module (CEM)
-1A5F Communication with the brake control module. Signal missing.
-6A02 Door unlocked, right rear signal too high.

Rear Electronic Module (REM)
-8D11 Upper brake light. Signal intermittent.

Transmission Control Module (TCM)
-P0810 Clutch position control error.

Audio Module (AUM)
-47FF Amplifier not connected or communication problems. Permanent / intermittent fault.
 
Willing to believe all of those will go away once you rebuild the alternator and clear the codes. Possibly solder the ABS module board while you're in there.

Check the power to the BCM and make sure it has all of them - in the wiring diagram on certain cars there is another fuse from the CEM that doesn't show up AS a power, but is.

If they are all OK and these codes come back, it is likely the ABS pump motor has shorted out, or has a portion that is damaged. Now, depending on how bad this is, it can damage the BCM circuitry. I just send these to xemodex now to get fixed. We can still get a pump/module from Volvo but it is something like 4K Canadian. Xemodex will rebuild both for a fraction of that.

Next up - alternator. in 2004 they started using a LIN controlled regulator. Your car is likely the old fashioned exciter style. If you get a later alternator you'll need the non LIN (communicating) regulator.

PS fluid leaking on the alternator is normal. There is an updated suction hose that seals much better than the early braided hose (reservoir was also updated at some point and doesn't leak from the seam/cap as easily).

Remember, these cars can throw ghost codes. Not every code needs to be dealt with.

I was able to grab an alternator from the junkyard. I figured it was worth the risk to save some money (only $30 with a one-year return policy).

The car I pulled it from was also a 2001, so I’m not worried about compatibility issues. The car had a hefty stack of service records in the glovebox, and no power steering drips on the alternator.


Unrelated, but I found this S70 with a great color and wheel combo.

Also unrelated, but the junkyard had probably the most rust-free MGB I’ve seen in a lonnnng time.
 
I’m back! It’s been a while since an update. Here’s a summary of what’s been going on….

Early in March, I finally got to enjoy the Volvo in the snow and do some AWD snow shenanigans. Despite the errors in the cluster, the traction control and ABS work quite well.

I also priced out wipers and being a cheapskate, I realized it was still cheaper to buy 05-07 wiper arms from the junkyard than it was to simply buy proper wiper blades for my 01-04 style. So now my car is rocking 05-07 wiper arms and blades - I feel bad for future owners when they try and figure that out, but I’ll leave a note on a service record.

The local junkyards have been receiving lots of P2s, meaning my stockpile of questionable used parts is growing.

When walking up to this “XC70” I realized it was actually an S60! If you wondered what an S60 looks like with an XC bumper, here you go:

I ended up buying an '06 XC70 partially because of this thread and a few others I'd seen around the internet about P2 cars, but I paid $1900. It's the later P2 beige that's a little green-ish but otherwise pretty close to your car. Around here they go for like, $6k in good condition but the old guy I bought it off of couldn't get it through inspection. I put a $25 ETA from the junkyard on and replaced the Amazon MAF he'd installed and it runs great with no codes.

I also had to replace the aftermarket radiator (that looked pretty new) because the upper hose nipple had been crushed. Word to the wise, the OEM Volvo radiator has a metal ring inside to prevent this from happening, the Nissens or whatever aftermarket was in there does not. Otherwise, it's a rock solid car and generally more comfortable than my 300k mile 940 Turbo.

Congrats on the purchase! We just picked up an XC90 in that same gray/beige/green color.
2006 was a good year for those.
 
More updates from mid-March to early April...

Between a good Volvo mechanic friend of mine and myself, the car had the front strut assemblies replaced, the coolant flushed, two transmission drains and refills, the alternator and voltage regulator swapped, and an alignment.

Transmission has been misbehaving for the majority of my ownership, so I was relieved to see no shavings or concerns on the magnetic drain plug. When fully warmed up, the trans gives a kick on the 3-4 shift and on the 2-1 downshift. Research leads me to think the trans solenoids might be worn, but I'm open to feedback.

After installing the strut assemblies, we realized they were standard V70 strut assemblies, oops! The front end sat a bit lower, but rode fine after a fresh alignment.

Replacing the voltage regulator cleared up a LOT of the error codes. ABS Module codes are still present, so that might get shipped to Xemodex soon, we'll see.
 
An identical twin at the junkyard that's been in the closed-off processing area was finally put out for parts. Even has the same choco-brown seats!

While I was at the junkyard, this running, driving Ford Ranger was driven off the trailer and sold to the junkyard. I asked the owners why they scrapped it and they said it was because the air conditioning didn't work. It's crazy to me that a chunk of cars at the pick-n-pull were reliably running and driving.

The identical twin at the junkyard donated all five of its coil packs to my XC70 after my ghetto pre-owned ones finally died. So naturally, I'm switching them for more ghetto pre-owned ones. My car was holding an idle with only 3 of the 5 cylinders firing, crazy!
 
If you've been following my other threads, you'll know that we're consolidating the herd of cars and will be switching out our BMW X3 and this XC70 for an XC90, once the right one pops up.

Felt nice to get a break from the XC70 to work on the BMW, but I soon missed the Volvo after realizing BMW used two different belt tensioner styles for the 2005 X3 with the 3.0L. Why would they do that mid-year on the same engine??? Naturally, the only way to identify the one you have is to remove some of the plastic coverings and inspect it. I'd tried calling our local BMW Dealership with my VIN, but they wouldn't give any info unless I brought the car in for them to perform the work for $700 - just the tensioner, no belt included. Wild! I pulled ours off, found one online with the same part number for $20, and had it replaced in less than an hour.

Great color combo: Ash Gold Metallic #446 with the less-common choco-brown leather seats.

5-cylinder turbo, automatic, working all-wheel-drive. Great crash ratings (duh), decent MPG.

Has some good options (some stock, but still good IMO):
-Dual climate control.
-Heated seats.
-Automatic headlights.
-Working headlight wipers and sprayers.
-Heated side mirrors.
-Factory subwoofer (less-common)

December 2024:
-Airbag recall done at Lyle Pearson Volvo Boise

March 2025:
-Replaced windshield wipers and arms.
-Replaced alternator.
-Replaced voltage regulator.
-Drained/refilled coolant.
-Drained/refilled transmission (twice).
-New front strut assemblies, including struts, springs, supports, and hardware.
-Alignment.

April 2025:
-Replaced coil packs.

Good tires, good suspension, good paint, good upholstery.

Heat works, AC works. Backs seats have air vents for the kiddos.

Will eventually need:
-ABS Module soldering/replacement.
-Trans Solenoids?

Clean title.
$1200 OBO
