AW70/71 bell housing interchange ?

Not between non lockup converter transmissions, lockup bellhousings have 1 less window on the bottom, maybe they would all swap over but I haven't tried. the bellhousing has 2 o-rings and is used to the seal pump.

Are the bell housings on AW70/71 trans different ?
I mated a 1984 B23F engine that used a AW70 to a 1993 AW71L in a 1993-940. So, I installed a 1984 B23F engine into a 1993-940, and used 940's transmission. B230F engine had a rod knocking.

I had to drill two holes (and thread them with a tap) into B23F's block for CPS;

Before drilling these holes, the CPS mounting bracket had to be at the right height position to the CPS so CPS does not bang the flex plate. Screenshot 2025-09-27 224824.jpg

My block has the CPS mounting holes, was getting ready to mod the AW71 bell housing to make room for the CPS mounting bracket. Was not sure if the AW70/71 bell housing would interchange as I do have AW70 bell housing that is made for CPS. Thanks

AW70/71 bell housing would interchange

Considering Volvo used both, logistically, keep it simple so both will work. OEMs tend to keep various parts to mate to various blocks/trannies in previous years. Of course, a 1984 AW70 would not have the CPS "cut out" on it, but it could be mated to a later vintage B230F.

Footnote - Mileage wise, not much difference between AW70 vs AW70L, unless a person knows how to manage speed in a city environment. The lockup versions have a "Georgia overdrive" below 45 mph. Higher mpg in a city can be obtained by keeping the vehicle moving, and not stopping at traffic lights.

When I converted my '85 GLT to LH2.4, I used a hacksaw and a coarse metal file to cut a notch for the CPS in the original '85 AW71. Pictures here.
That's a great write up, just the info I needed. Looks like you could have used a hole saw then cut with hacksaw to hole ?

It's soft enough metal that you could use a hole saw if you have one that's the right size. I rounded the corners slightly and tried to smooth the whole shape so that there weren't any obvious places where stress cracks could start.
