B21F performance upgrades

I just bought a 1981 262C. It has been swapped with a B21F. I was thinking about swapping the engine, but read that the B21F is over engineered and can handle a bit more power. Any recommendations on upgrades for that engine?

It looks like a later 9:1 B21F with big rods which I think is a good little motor.

What do you actually want? You just said you were thinking of swapping the engine but gave no reason. Engine swapped cars are not fun to own unless you know exactly what you're doing and you can afford about a year of ironing out all of the kinks. You would be reengineering the car, are you capable of that task? There's not much more you can squeeze out of that motor unless you do all of the work to bolt everything from a turbo redblock motor on.

I would tend to disagree.
If you swapped in a B230FT with an LH2.4 240 harness, it would be as reliable and usable as any stock turbo 700 or 900.

A friend of mine has a shop that exclusively does this type of custom work, swaps and whatnot. He’d be handling it, if it comes to that. I’d like to get 300 hp (I’d go more, but the rear end might not cope). If I could rebuild the engine (new cam, head work, etc…), maybe add electric fuel management and a turbo and get close to that, that would probably be sufficient.

How much are you willing to spend on all that custom work on top of the $8k you spent to buy the car at auction?

I’m not planning it will be cheap. If I end up doing a swap a 5/6 speed is going in there too… and possibly a rear end. I expect it will hurt a bit.

You’re not getting anywhere close to 300hp naturally aspirated. +T. Harder to find parts now but still the only way aside from nitrous to get 300 out of it cheaply-ish… it is 2026 and not 2006 when turbo parts were plentiful in the JY,

When I here the word "swap" I'm thinking of from a different engine family, like a V8. I agree that a B230FT would be simple enough as you can use all factory parts.

Unless you're cutting up the body to put some massive sticky tires on it you'll probably be fine with a 1031 rear end from a late 240 and some kind of LSD

If you bought the black 262C which just sold on BaT, then nicely done! That one looked like a survivor, nice paint and interior. I sure hope the body wasn't riddled with repairs under the sleek black finish.

Regarding the drivetrain, you must know that any Volvo 4 cylinder with 300+HP at the wheel/crank is going to be temperamental. You are asking much more power from the system than the original design. If you are going 5/6 speed manual as you say, then you might as well go non-native on the power plant. The LS swap has been covered here ad nauseam and is surely the easiest way to get 300+ with reliability. There are many many LS builds documented here so the path has been ironed out for you.... no real trail blazing. As Anthony says above, the 1031 will withstand that torque provided you don't attempt to launch on sticky rubber.

Good luck, and please create a proper build thread so we can follow your progress. Again, sweet 262, congrats.

I'd just go with a 200hp B230FT. That is plenty of power and it will do so reliably without causing a cascade of upgrades throughout the whole car. With a T5 or TKX transmission it will be bulletproof.

But then you have to live with t5/tkx noise

I have strongly considered an ellis swap just to have a quiet transmission

I'm also against the blanket "I want 300hp" statement because there's so many ways to achieve that output that they will result in completely different driving vehicles. A car with a 2JZ-GTE with stock twin turbos will not drive like a car with an S54B32 will not drive like a car with an LS1 will not drive like a car with a Version 8 EJ207 etc.

John V has said it best somewhere on this site; we drive engines bolted to cars... or something to that extent.

The upside is that it all just bolts in with a bit of welding for a downpipe to fit nicely.

I am also against everything needing 300hp, if you want a reliable and quiet 300hp just go buy a modern sport sedan.
200hp is just 300hp with the gas pedal 2/3rds of the way down

BTW a 262C will come with the 1031 rear axle since it was a V6 car from the factory.

You can get about 140hp pretty easy with that engine. After that it takes better parts and more headwork, a hotter cam, etc. For not that much power.
