Hi all, this is my first time starting a build thread. I figured instead of the usual Facebook page question post I could use the forum itself to document my progress and ask questions here.
Okay, let me give a little bit of context as to what I am working with, and what my goals are. I am building a B21FT(i) for my 1976 242 DL. I currently have the block, M-rods, factory B21FT dished pistons, a 90+ manifold and a b230 intake manifold with 850 Orange top injectors. I’ll be running the car using Microsquirt V3 EFI. My turbo of choice is a Kinugawa TD04hl-19T with the correct stepped flange for the factory turbo manifold. I have a 3” downpipe and 3” catback that will eventually be joined together.
I am shooting for 240hp at the crank, although to be perfectly honest if I don’t hit that mark and the car pulls great and has solid drivability, that’s good enough for me! This car will be daily driven 3/4 seasons in Montana, with the majority of these drives being regular short drives and spirited mountain rips. (No, I won’t be tracking the car, nor will I be drifting or drag racing it.)
So far, I have installed a press-fit YoshiFab -10AN turbo oil return. I have also installed the crankshaft with the correct 0.010” oversized main bearings. I achieved a 0.020” clearance on every single bearing. It spins nicely, not loose, but there isn’t any binding or forcing it around. My end play is also within spec!
That brings us all up to today. Now that the crankshaft is in, I am working on installing the rods+pistons. I have just done an initial check of all the piston rings end gaps, and this is what I have come up with. (See attached file) Does this seem like too much end gap for each ring? I’ve used the formula of 0.007” for each first ring, and 0.0075” for each second ring. This is using a formula from a previous thread on TB about piston rings end gaps. I am looking to run 17 pounds of boost through this B21FT, and believe I’ve gapped accordingly?
