so I just got a 16v head to swap onto my b230ft. Im thinking about buying new cam followers/ tappets for the head rebuild. are the 8v and 16v tappets the same? could I buy 8v tappets for the 16v head? it seems hard to find the 16v tappets online.

thanks!

16v tappets are hydraulic and different size I think then the 8v ones. So they are different. I know there are some solid ones you can buy in Europe that fit and are like the 8v ones but not sure exactly what ones they are. I do have a pack of 8 new 16v ones I could sell you. You'll need 16 of course.

VW 16v lifters are a direct swap, as at any of the VW hydraulic 8v lifters from mid 80s-early 2000s.
Skip the “lightweight” diesel ones, as they don’t last.

I used some solid lifters from an older VW diesel on mine. But they were designed to have the lash adjusted using lash caps - between the valve stem and lifter itself. You assembled, measured, then carefully ground the lash cap to correct the gap. Very light weight, no underpump/overpump issues, but it was such a PITA that I didn't bother the next time around (went back to stock cams).

yes, very tedious. but can be rewarding!

Indeed it is! I did it on my 8v because I couldn't get shims thin enough for 4mm lash caps and my giant cam, so I had to take 5-10 thou off of the lash caps. It was very satisfying getting every valve bang on to within my ability to measure the lash.
