Barnfind 1987 740 GLE On-going Resto Thread

I just gotta note that with the plug and sensor at the top, the diff cover looks like some kinda cartoon robot head.

Updated the thread since now this has turned more into a restoration thread vs the original needing help on getting it running.

Last night I finally got the freshly sandblasted and painted rear dif cover re-installed. Used some Reinzosil on the surface of both the dif cover and the difs surface as well since it had some pitting from rust that I didnt trust to seal perfectly with just a new gasket. New grade 10, zinc coated bolts too

Letting it cure today while I am at work and should be able to fill it with fluid tonight and bolt everything back together in the rear end.

And yes I know the parking brake cables are in a sad state, I need to pull a rust free rear end off a parts car

Back after driving the car around a bit. Ive done about 150 miles so far just putting around town and on the country back roads. A few observations:

1. Coolant cap was spitting coolant all over the engine bay, not sure if its a bad seal or sign of something more serious. I got a 100kpa black cap from MTC to replace the original 150kpa grey one that was on there. The "firmness" of the fit does make me more confident that maybe the seal had just gone bad? Car holds temp fine, heater works perfect, no noticeable issues at this time with the cooling system other than that. (Have yet to drive it with the new cap due to pt 2.).

2. Oil pushing past the new oil cap seals and from some of the valve cover gasket. I think the PCV is clogged. I have yet to do a glove test but I replaced the oil cap seal before I drove it a bunch and its still leaking.

New PCV in and new ECT installed.

Was hard starting when cold but fired right up yesterday in the sub freezing temps we are getting here in NC. The hose off the PCV was super short, but I managed to get it connected. Odd, might replace it at some time.
