Can anyone please verify flywheel timing-ring position @ TDC!? B230FT

Since Haynes sucks sometimes and doesn't tell you these things, and since someone FORGOT to mark the position before he took the flywheel/ring gear/timing ring off, I found a hit on voca that says- "58 holes in the timing ring, with a void of 2 holes (room for 60 total). The void will be at the bottom of the starter opening (you can SEE it, at the bottom of the opening, if you were looking at it straight on) IF installed correctly.... while cylinder 1 is at TDC."

I'm really hoping this is true, already mated the motor and trans back together real nice, but waiting on install until i hear from my trusty TB friends with more knowledge than me :).

Thanks a ton in advance.

At TDC #1 (or #4, really), the two missing holes should be in the starter hole area. It's not a precise positioning, there are only 8 ways the flywheel can go on. At TDC the missing holes are either there or they aren't.

Just for fun, the timing mark on that front pulley can be off too, you know.

Another unknown trick...

If you have the flex plate off, there's an arrow on the back. With the engine at TDC, the arrow points at the speed sensor.

Otherwise the missing holes line up with the starter opening. 1 hole off makes a pretty big difference.

Thanks a lot for this. I have it then. I couldn't see the damn arrow- wish i noticed it, would have been a lot faster

Thanks John, luckily i have it then. I know what you mean, if it was turned a hole in each direction i don't think you could see the void in the starter hole at all. Appreciate it.

I'm surprised you say the timing mark can be off on the front pulley - you must mean the harmonic balancer, i know once the rubber goes the tic can be off because the metal can shift but i was thinking timing mark on the cam gear... Since the front cam bushing has a dowel on it, and the gear has a notch, i know that gear couldn't exactly be off.. Unless someone snapped the dowel off the cam bushing of course... Which is not the case in my case anyways.

t5rguy7, I owe you a beer or or 12 for asking this question when you did! I almost forgot to do this before I installed my engine :omg:

I stumbled on your thread the other day and was like :wtf: It would have sucked to have to pull the engine....again.

Thank you Sir.

Hey i'm glad you found it too. Did it come up just from a google search or what? I originally just figured the void in the timing ring needed to match TDC but boy was i wrong. I was lucky enough to find a post on voca that said - bottom of the starter hole. It was minutes before being reinstalled into my 780.

I ended up just getting my B230FT running last night after a rebuild and swap from one car to another. Ended up having a failed radio suppression relay and injector resistor pack.... Figures it was nothing to do with the motor and trans rebuild.... Just the car sat for 2 years.

^ Nope, no google foo...I just saw your thread and then I thought :wtf: I better check that! If all the planets align mine should be running tomorrow......:-P
