Can I safely modify a 240 strut assembly for abs sensor?

Two questions. I want to add front wheel VSS to my 240. Traction control purposes. I can't tell if the ABS 240 strut assembly/spindle has been cast differently than the non-ABS assembly, but in the images I've found, it seems like they just cast a hole in the strut assembly near where the arm sticks out for the tie rod mount and then the sensor can read the tone ring on the hub on the other side. I found a picture of the sensor location on Dave Barton's site. https://www.240turbo.com/240strutlargehub_lateABS-1b.jpg

1. If I drill a hole in the strut assembly for the sensor... it doesn't have to be the stock 240 abs sensor, but any VSS that'll fit in the hole, will it negatively impact the structural integrity of the whole thing? I'm not sure what to think here and my gut isn't giving me very good feedback on the issue. Normally I trust my gut as I speak the same language but this time it's silent.

2. Will the non-abs spindle accept the ABS hub with tone ring?

Normally, I'd just hit up my local PnP with the ready supply of 240's waiting to have parts pulled from them and procure a set of ABS front strut assemblies, but it's not 2004 anymore and I haven't seen a single 240 in the JY in nearly 8 months.

Penny for your thoughts?

I think one of the Buchka brothers modified a non-abs housing for a sensor. But I'm not 100% it was them.

Yes the ABS hub/bearings will fit on a non abs spindle as long as it is the later, larger, spindle style.

Ok. awesome!

Hmm... that's probably going to be the problem... this is an 84. I didn't realize the spindle length changed.

The ABS strut is a different casting/forging and considerably bulkier than the non-ABS one in the area where the sensor goes through. It also uses a slightly different arrangement of bolts to hold the dust shields on, i.e. they moved the bolts to make space for the sensor. My gut tells me that drilling a big hole in a non-ABS strut would end badly.

My suggestion would be to make a bracket that bolts to the dust shield bolts, to hold a different but suitable sensor. Then use the ABS hubs. I don't think the 240 sensor would be workable because of the way that it does go through the strut, but something that sticks out radially would probably be much easier to fit in.

1) 100% different forging where they added a lot of material to hold the sensor. I wouldn't try to replicate by drilling a regular spindle. You would need to come up with a different placement
2) no it wont, theres extra material on an ABS hub to allow for the speed sensor ring.

Are you wanting to use a stock abs sensor? I don't see why you couldn't weld on a piece of 1/8th inch steel to the knuckle and run a cherry sensor if its for a after market ecu.
