Cheap lh 2.3l power

what would be more important head work/ hg (taking off a small amount)
or getting a cam or some sort....

im not sure if i should be excited or terrified when i get closer to starting on this project..:grin:

or even better flowing manifolds, both sides sounds interesting but damn if things dont got a lot of money. ps. im broke

The cheapest way to make a lot more power is through turbocharging your engine. You could be producing 200 hp for approximately $1,000 or less in used parts.

hmmm, with oem turbo or im guessing after market ones, ive acknowledged the fact that factory may not be anything too crazy. but at the same time i havent done too much research myself into them at all
 
i did however find a H series cam that will probably fit in my budget

doesnt say anything about it being manufactured for NA or +t



 
You can hit 200 with a proper stage zero, a +T, a cam and 12 lbs of boost all day long. All pretty much factory besides a boost controller.

If you dumped 5 grand into an N/A you might hit 150.
With that amount of money into a NA engine you're closer to 250hp.

150hp NA is what the VOC engines are without too much work. That's using an OEM cam, slightly stiffer single valve springs, NO porting, shaved head, and chips. The biggest detractor of power in those engines is the intake and camshaft, fix that and it's ~200hp NA.
 
First post states M47 - 90+ LH 2.4 car. Decent starting point.
Must have missed the m47. Personally I would keep it an NA car with the m47. T+ it when you get money to upgrade the trans, so you lessen the chance to blow it up. Shave the head, get the H cam, get a Tune from RBP.
 
If you stay NA, you have to shave the head. If you turbo it, you definitely should not. If you're on a broke budget, you should stay NA because while you can make the 200hp adding an OEM style turbo, odds are your trans will not like it and that'll blow that budget to Kingdom Come. 1mm mill off the head, cam, and a tune will net you real results for about half what you have to spend. The 1mm mill won't get you the compression ratio that the H will REALLY want, but if it's cheap, U BUY.
 
Also, m47 is fine with a mild +t setup. It's when you're doing clutch dumps/kicks that they start to have issues.

Neener neener neener the last turbo engine I did a head for had 2.5mm shaved :)

The last turbo engine I put together was 9:1 with dished pistons and chamber work, and the engine sitting in the shop with "8:1" wisecos is definitely getting some material removed to get that CR into the 9:1+ range.

That's why I never recommend it. Most people that want more power are doing it to drive the car harder. If you don't know how to treat the m47, and try to race a Civic at the stop light, you may not be driving home after, or at least without third gear.

I've seen beat m45s last behind 300+hp turbo rally cars. Anything is possible if you're not smashing gears and actually maintain your equipment :lol:

I've got a tired m46 with the aluminum case, and an Engine that should be pushing 300hp once I modify the APC. But I keep the worn clutch in so I slil the clutch instead of blowing up the trans.
