Clicking noise when above 15-30mph?

I have a very weird clicking noise coming from the rear. Sounds like a rock stuck in the tyre threads but there isn't one. Very loud and disappears at low speed turns/when not moving engine still running.

I haven't done anything to the rear of this car. Checking for play by lifting wheel and spinning prop by hand indicates that there is some sort of play. If I spin the wheel itself I can hear a sound coming from the differential area, and slight vibrations from the differential.

What's common practice here? Replace oil, the cross-part (knutkors in swedish), and maybe wheel bearings just to rule those out?

I would remover the rear cover and make sure the pinion and ring gear aren't missing any chunks, see whats in the oil with a magnet also. Loud clicking is usually a broken tooth on one of those gears, although something else could be broken in there.
It's probably not wheel bearings.

As I do not have much time I have booked a diagnosis with Volvo next friday. Rather have them take a look and help determine the cause rather than me trying to figure it out on my own which would take months.

I took it to Volvo for diagnosis, and they were really nice.

They looked at the pinion for excessive play and shit, used a stethoscope but couldn't pinpoint it. They suggest looking at wheel bearings and removing diff cover to take a look inside.

Cost: free.

Actually very happy since I was really worried about it being the pinion and they just said that most likely it is something else. And i'm moving to a new place with a cold-garage so I can do this on my own.

Make sure all the wheel nuts are properly tight. We had a Mazda a few years back with 2 nuts that had come loose on one wheel (yes, torqued to spec), and the wheel flexed just enough to go Clack! Clack! Clack! every revolution. A week ago a Mercedes did the same thing. Again, torqued to spec.

I have been having issues with lugnuts on the car, going to check it out. Will start looking into it in around 2 weeks or so, currently in process of moving out and getting all that sorted. My guess is either the diff was welded and the weld broke, causing it to rattle around in the diff. Bad wheel bearings, or something with the wheel.

I drifted the car for on gravel and I noticed that it was SUPER easy to start spinning. Go 20km/h in 2nd gear, left hand down and push on the throttle a bit and both wheels started spinning instantly. Did this for a couple of weeks and one day I did actually hear a big "ca-clonk" from the rear. In my other 240 I can only start spinning tyres if I do a clutch drop, use e-brake or a scandiflick.
