Daddy, the $400 Rallycross 245

results are in; like i said, the field was small, but here's the important number in my eyes:
fastest lap by guy in caged first-gen impreza with actual nokian rally tires (soft compound) and $2000 coilovers -- 1:21.33
fastest lap we did in our $400 idiot car -- 1:21.69 (nice)

thank you, fathers.

since we now have proof of concept for both the rallycross series and the car, we'll likely put together a car for each of us for next year. this one will be andy's, and i want something that i can maybe take to drift events as well. stay tuned for a couple more dirt cheap dingbat 240 builds i guess.

We had a snow race on Saturday. Nothing extraordinary to report. The car ran well without incident. The heater works very well.

the windshield did stop being attached to the car a little bit.

Ah yes, forgot about that part. Closing the hatch popped the windshield out on the driver side.

Any recommendations for a fix? Goop the heck out of it with silicone? See if an auto glass company will only replace the seal? Yank the glass out and replace with chicken wire?

Started resetting the windshield yesterday, finished today. It wasn’t as bad or hard as I thought it would be. I probably would’ve tried to do a more thorough job if this car needed to be nice. I gently pried the windshield out, and layed it over.

Spent the next while cleaning out the window frame. Lots of rust, very little butyl residue. I was fully expecting a goopy sticky nightmare, so I was pleasantly surprised to find the butyl had hardened enough to behave like rubber. Much easier to remove from the frame and glass.

After scraping, brushing and wire wheeling, i neutralized the rust and brushed on some por15 primer. Then Quin brought me a hotdog. As the por15 cured we scraped all the old butyl off the glass and cleaned it well. Then I applied the 25mm universal windshield trim, which went on and stuck pretty easily, and we left the primer to cure overnight.
Today we test fit the window and the vertical alignment looked spot on without any spacer blocks, which was nice because we didn’t have any. Applied the 3m butyl ribbon to the pinchweld, and set the glass into the frame. Gently pressing all over, and so far it seems to be holding up very well.

Saturday marked the first race of the season, and the car performed very well. I pushed it very hard, and it didn’t skip a beat. Our course was very soft gravel that became deeper and deeper throughout the day. Saturday I was fastest rwd, Sunday mrak was fastest rwd after removing his front sway and strut brace.
On the hard pack, we’re at least competitive with the awd, in the soft gravel, our fastest times were roughly 5 seconds slower than their slowest. Fun times had by all. The coolest car there was an Isuzu impulse with a northstar v8 swap. It was bonkers.

By the end of the day, there was a fair amount of oil on the driver side of the block. I’m guessing my breather box isn’t quite keeping up with the excess pressure. Breather box hose is currently routed to a nipple on the carb filter housing. Probably not enough vac there to make a difference. I’m hoping swapping to a vented valve cover will help. I also need to do torque rod bushings because they are verrrrrry squishy. The rear gets a little squirmy with every shift.
