Faded commando bumpers

Has anyone polished their bumpers? I know these bumpers have a finish on them, very thick. What or how did you go about making them shinny? I have an idea but listening for other options. Thanks
 
Most likely they have been clear anodized, if you strip it then the aluminum is left unprotected to oxidation.

Not afraid to do the work. Was wondering how other tackled this thankless job. And yes, the metal not the rubber. I was thinking to strip any clear coat. Then hit it with 220 on a DA then polish. And finally a 2k clear. Sound plan?
