I’ve got a 1993 Volvo 240 wagon dead stock.

My transmission is pretty sus atm and I was originally thinking just fix it and be done but instead of just fixing it and stopping there I’ve started throwing around the idea of getting it ready for a large trip while I’m at it. I’ve always wanted to drive from Alaska down to Chile and I think it’d be sick to take the Volvo but I feel like it would need some modding to make it worthy of a big trip with off road sections and shit. (In a perfect world) I’d drop in a new engine, transmission, and rear differential, beef up the shocks a bit and put some bigger tires on it and i think itd be a friggin tank I’ve seen the LucaCarMods lift kit for them and I think it’d look dope with a lil lift but the question is. What to go with.
I don’t have the faintest idea what I’d need power wise and suspension wise what do yall think for ideas that won’t do a massive number on my wallet are there any pieces of the puzzle i would need that im not accounting for?
 
For a trip like that you'll want it as stock as possible, plan for the right time of year and you don't really need anything too fancy. A solid stage zero on EVERYTHING and some HD rear springs should be more than enough.

Significantly more important than vehicle mods is the packing list. You'll want a way to carry two spare tires, extra fuel, lots of water, and any spares you think you might need. On a 240 I'd bring a fuel pump relay and a crankshaft position sensor.
 
yeah if you watch any third world driving videos on bad roads you'll see that you really don't need much unless you're actually going off-road. most of the route through North America will even be paved and quite civilized.

good tires, extra fuel, tools and consumables (belts, fuses, wire and crimp connectors...), emergency food and water (in case you're broken down and stranded for days), and a good long range radio (or better, emergency beacon) are probably a lot more important to spend money on when venturing through remote places. appropriate tires/chains for the time of year. travel paperwork for each country. all that sort of stuff.
