I have a customer that wants to convert their 83 242 dual headlights to a 90's era single headlight style.
Do you need to replace the grill also and will the 90s era single headlight bracket bolt up or do I need to replace the whole front end bracket behind the bumper?
Don't ask me why:) Dude just wants it done.
thanks all!

Core support, fenders, and Grille will have to change.
You will also need to cut out and weld in the new style cowl to make the hood fit unless the customer wants a flathood ($$$). 1975-1985 have a concave cowl vent, 1986-1993 are convex. That's the biggest mistake kids (sorry to generalize) make when they convert their '86+ car to the old style front.

It's easier to just buy a late model car to boot.

Reverse of what I did on my 93.

To do it right (just to get the grille & headlamps in) you need the lower valence and the headlamp supports. The upper tie bar is the same across the years. Modify wiring harness for headlamp housings.
The problem as stated will be:
valance won't align with existing fenders. Side markers don't line up (replace fenders & side markers)
Hood won't align with grille width - if you change the hood, that won't align with the cowl.
Bunch of compromises to be worked out, which is what I did, in reverse.

For replacement good lenses on Rock Auto:
003177001 Hella $64 ea.
003177061 Hella $68 ea.
without bulbs. Use good H4 and H1 halogens, not LED retrofits.

It is doable, but he needs the right kind of headlamps.
He should use the same ones that were used in the 260s in Europe (also some of the early 240s with wide European lights).
That because those will have sortof a "grille" around them, that will match the height of the grille he has.
But of course he could change to a flathood and a flat grille too.

I wouldnt do the fender swap etc. because if you kindof do the later conversion, the hood wont line up with the air intake below window.

But it is possible to rock those fenders with the early type euro lights.

This is the kindof light he would want: https://bilwebauctions.se/en/olofstrom-klassiska/bilar/volvo-244-gl-b21-4

Core support, fenders, and Grille will have to change. Hood wont line up either. If your customer likes this look i would suggest trying to find some "tv screen" headlights from a european 240. Those should bolt right up and give a similar look.
thanks for responding, im not familiar the TV SCREEN headlamps and would they bolt up with bull nose hood?

Don't do that.

Your options in order of cheapest to most expensive.
1. Keep the coffin hood and swap in euro tv screens
2. Flat hood swap with euro squares
3. Flat hood swap with euro tv screens and skinny grill
