High Beams Stuck On

Hi All,

I recently replaced my indicator/turn signal stalk in my 1989 Volvo 240 GL. Both turn signals function as they should and when the cars headlights are in position 1 (off) and position 2 (parking lights), pulling back on the stalk turns high beams on and releasing them turns them off.

However, as soon as I put the lights in position 3 (on) the high beam turns on straight away without pulling on the stalk. Pulling on the stalk does not turn them back off either so the lights are stuck in high beam when in position 3.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Check the grounds to your headlights. I had a similar issue on my '92 244 GL wherein the high beams would randomly come on if I messed with the headlight switch - or very occasionally when using the turn signals. The ring connector for the ground wire on the driver's side was super loose, plus the wire was badly degraded. Crimping on a new wire and connector and bolting it down tight made my problem go away.

The toggle switch inside the relay isn't working. It could be a bad connection that doesn't provide enough power to the relay to activate the toggle or a stuck toggle. This thread has some pics of the relay with the cover removed so you can see what I'm talking about.
