How to easily make your DLR only come on when the engine is running.

All my Canadian friends might like this one. Our cars have the low beams and taillights come on when the key is in the on position. I quite frankly think that is the stupidest thing ever, and I've killed my battery many times just messing around with the key on. The headlight knob is absolutely useless and the only point of even moving it to the on position is when I need the high beams, which is basically never.

So first, lets get the those taillights disabled and make them only come on when you goddamn want them on.
Take the switch apart and you'll see three contact pads on the top, drop some super glue on the pad on the left. Let it dry and drop another layer on. I did this a while ago so I don't have pictures, but the next time I have some free time I'll take the switch apart and get a photo.

Next onto the DRLs.
When you had the switch apart you saw there was another set of contact pads on the bottom. That's for the DLR. If you want to completely turn them off you can just remove the metal bar on the knob side. However I still want them on for safety, So I left that bar in.

If you look on the connector, you'll see a yellow wire with a blue stripe. This wire gets power with the key in position 2. We are going to splice in a NC relay on this wire and have it controlled by the oil pressure switch. Now you have to use a relay with 5 prongs as we need the circuit to flow until we energize the relay. I had a spare wiring harness from a parts car so I used a relay holder to make it cleaner. Wire the dash side of the wire to pin 30 and the switch side to pin 87a.

Make sure to solder the connections. I didn't have any heat shrink on me so I had to use electrical tape... and of course I only had bright red. Oh well, it works.

You are going to tie pin 85 and 30 together so you have power going to the low side of the relay, thus making it activate when it is grounded. Now splice pin 86 into pin 17 on connector C on the gauge cluster. It is a black wire and goes to the oil pressure switch.

It is a NC ground switch so as soon as it gets oil pressure it opens the circuit and the dash light goes out. And now it will turn off our relay and let our DRL come on. Makes sense? Opposite eh? Screenshot 2024-10-14 191730.jpg
Super simple. And now your stupid lights will only come on with a running engine. As it should have been made.

Oh yeah.. Don't run out of oil or your headlights will turn off :(
