How to remove engine from transmission

I was wondering if anyone knew the steps to remove the transmission from the engine, my goal is to leave the transmission in the car while I lift the engine out. I’ve already removed the bell housing bolts, motor mounts, and the coupler thing that connected the bottom of the engine and transmission together, as well as all the wires and such. When I try to lift the engine out, it lifts the entire car as well as the transmission and I believe there’s still something I need to do to get them disengaged. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Looks like it:
I did not, I appreciate that a lot. Do you know if I’m able to lift it straight up after this or if there’s something else I need to do? Can’t find any videos of anyone JUST taking out the engine without the transmission mated.

You’ll have to move it forward some while lifting up. The torque converter in the transmission has a ~1” snout that goes into the crankshaft on the engine. Taking the fan off will give you more than enough space.

Going back in is tougher to get everything lined up on the 240s because they don’t have much room on the firewall.

Also, I’m not sure how to get the vice grips on with the transmission still attached, there doesn’t seem to be a way to stop it from spinning.

What are you putting vice grips on? For the torque converter bolts you just have to keep the flex plate ring gear from turning while you remove them. A prybar does the trick.

Appreciate it! Not to ask too much, but where specifically would you recommend putting the pry bar? Don’t want to accidentally grind something to death

If you wedge the pointy end into the ring gear and the back side up by where the engine and transmission meet you’ll understand after it turns on you a time or two. If you watch transmission removal videos of virtually any longitudinal drivetrain they’ll explain something similar.

I used to pull transmissions for a living and the torque converter bolts have always been my least favorite part.

Make sure to push the torque converter back into the transmission bell housing so it will be safe.
Support the transmission BEFORE you pull the engine off.
Keep the engine level (well, at the same angle) as you remove it. Less chance of damaging something.
There will be a coupe of locating dowels that keep the engine and trans centered. They are often rusty, and need a little help to come apart.

First time pulling an engine and/or trans?

Yes it is, I really underestimated it too. With pulling the engine forward, I only took the nuts off the studs with the mounts. I’m assuming I probably have to take off the 4 bolts on each motor mount as well?

It’s been a minute and I haven’t had a chance to work on the car, but I’m back and gave it another shot after removing the bolts from the flywheel and it still won’t budge. I lifted the engine so high the car lifted off the floor, and the engine maintained a perfect seal around the transmission. Not sure if anyone knows any tips or tricks to get it out besides keeping it level and trying to finesse it out, but anything will be greatly appreciated. I’m available to answer any questions as well, thank you!

I thought so too, and there is in fact one bolt still in but it can’t be pulled out cuz the firewall is in the way, but I believe all the threads are out.
