hurrry, need to know speaker size on 740.

My '90 740 has the same size front and rear - 5.25" . Also it has the speaker grilles that slide forward. The metal in the front speakers is in a weird shape, so some work is usually needed to fit any new set of speakers. The rear door speakers are pretty straightforward.

I put big size 6.5 infiniti in my front doors. Had to cut back sheet metal for the magnets to fit, but no big deal. Expect to have to do it!

My cars have the dash grilles, but no speakers in there. My question is what models got the speakers? What years? etc? Seems like a pain to install new speakers in there. Dash a pain to take out? lol

Also damn I started to replace stereo in my 94 945. Tried to remove the side panels enclosing the radio. Removed screws n bolts, but it wasn't budging, must not have got them all! Damn I know all about car stereos, but man it's not worth it doing that crap yourself sometimes! Pain in the ASS!

All you have to do to get the radio out is pull in the little tabs on either side of the radio. Just put flathead screwdrivers into the little holes on the right and left (almost parallel to the radio face), and themake perpendicular to the radio. This will pull the tabs in, and allow you to pull the radio.

6.5 up front, 5.25 out back.

dont listen to anyone who tries to tell you the 740 has 5.25 speakers in the front. they are 6.5s.

That looks like 5.25" to me. ;-) My 1991 745 has 5.25 all around in all doors(no speakers came in the front doors) as well as the dash speakers. I think when they changed the 740 Dash styling in 1991 the speaker size was changed as well. Be careful when ordering a speaker, if the magnet is too big you have to do some cutting. This happened with my Kappas in the rear doors and I had to remove a good amount of metal to get them to fit. Also, I think 4x6 plates will fit in the dash with a little work.

740 speaker size

I replaced mines recently and I have 5.25's in all four doors. (1989 740 Turbo). I have a Kenwood sytem with satellite Radio and Kenwood speakers 5/14.

I knew the tabs, but it was still a bitch! and I wanted to run wires to the rear area, so that is why I was trying to remove the side panels. Put the wire under carpet, etc

All the doors in all the 7/9 series are the same; they were not really upgraded over the years (maybe in 87?). The damn speakers had rivets!

5.25"; that is what you have. I WISH they were 6.5, but there is simply no way they did that from the factory. I'd like to see pictures proving that, as that would be an anomoly, which would be a cool Volvo idiosyncratic fact to know.

Just chiming in that I tied to put my 6.5s from my previous car into my 87 740, and there was no chance theyd fit. I did some minor modification and shoved them in the rears :)

I put in 6.5" on the front doors and 5.25" on the back doors of my '90 740 in Australia, I wish I have photos to prove that. 700 series used to have 5.25" all round in the doors up to '88, in '89 they changed door panels and front doors got 6.5" since then.

If you check the Volvo accessory catalogue, it'll say 150mm speaker element for the front and 130mm speaker element for the rear on '89 and later 700 / 900 series. It also says 130mm speaker element for front and rear doors on '82 - '88 models. I'll scan the catalogue this weekend if anyone wants to see the proof.

Very interesting, I measured the fronts on my 940, they came in at odd 6" which is very close to 150mm. And they have narrow flat sides on the top and bottom to allow the grill to fit over them.

I sure would like to hear if anyone has ever successfully replaced the fronts with something bigger than 5.25 and still retained the stock grills.

Oh and measuring the hole opening is not the whole story. That hole is what is required by the basket part of the speaker, depending on design, some speakers require smaller holes than others, some 6.5 can still fit in an opening for a 5.25.

Em... I did. I put in Alpine speaker model SPS-1629S (6.5") in the front doors and SPS-1329S (5.25") in the back doors of my '90 740, no cutting / chopping of door panels needed and the stock speaker grille went back on perfectly. For the front speakers however, I fitted them behind the door panels to avoid the stock speaker grille clearance issue.

My '85 744tic has no dash grilles or speakers, 5.25" in the front doors, nothing in the back doors, and some size of Boston Acoustics in the rear deck. I haven't taken them out yet to check the size, but since one of them's blown and buzzing, it's time to replace.

Oh, and the front door grilles don't pull up or forward in my car. They pull straight out. The rears do the same, although the metal in the back doors has a round piece for the magnet to go through, but it's not even punched out.

What are some halfway decent 5.25" components to put in there? I'm thinking a decent driver, and some tweeters in the door panel above them should work out just fine. I just know next to nothing about good brands of speakers though.

I've got Infinity Reference 5002i's all way round in my '89 745 mounting depth of 2-7/16 or 62mm - cut out 4-11/16 (120mm) Did some cutting for back speakers to fit hole.

Hope that helps.

Listen to the speakers before you buy them! (with your own music!)

wow, quit bring back the old threads.

I'm not a audiophile, there are three things I want in car stereo:
1) DVD porn
2) insane bass
3) clear bass.

All 740 models technically use 5" (not 5.25") speakers in the doors. Those are the actual specs from Volvo...it's a weird size that only Polk (aftermarket wise) and Pioneer made in the past few years, but even those Polks were too deep to fit properly; go figure.

A 5.25" speaker (most) will fit in the opening, and many people have managed to fit 6.5" models in the front doors without any issues. The depth is the most important factor when trying to fit speakers in the door on these cars. Either buy something that's shallow, or hack metal/form a spacer to fit the deeper ones.

The dash speakers on later model 740 series vehicles were 3" to 3.5" speakers which are molded into the speaker grille. Changing these out is a royal pain in the butt...but it can be done. Find a 3.5" after-market speaker that has a tweeter below the level of the surround (that rubber ring around the cone). If it's above the surround you'll have to make a spacer of some kind to keep from hitting thegrill. Grab a pair of wire cutters and gently nibble the old speaker away from the grille. Time and patience is required here. The end result should be a flat grill remaining and a mess of busted speaker pieces in the trash car. Mount the new speaker to the grill with short screws into the grill backer plate (use black screws so they're not visible under the grill, be careful not to damage the mess with too long of a screw either).

I did the above mod on my first car with green cone Infinity Kappas and was very happy with it. The sound from those little "green guys" was absolutely amazing. I'll probably be doing a replacement on the current one soon, so I'll get some pics when I do.
