Ill-Advised lifted 245+T DD Project

Did some garage cleaning, hopefully I can get it cleared tonight. There's a lot of crap I should probably just get rid of, but...
 
Got a car "part" in the mail today. Possibly the most expensive single item I've bought for it. Maybe not. Close.

I think Goldbricking about covers the nature of this endeavor.

@MistrThou came up for the weekend and we dug into the dash, managed to get the HVAC box out without cutting up our hands.

Look at those silky mitts :badboy:
Then he pointed out that the fan squeaks. So I have one on order, and will start putting things back together when that arrives.

I came, I saw, I hurt my back.
Still a bit sore when sitting.
 
I may try to sneak the split halves of the HVAC box into the dishwasher when my wife isn't looking. clean 'em up nice.
In the meantime, doing some housekeeping on the car. Got the busted e-code off, and replaced the glass. Thinking I'll paint the inside of the bucket (not the reflector) while they're off.
 
Blacked the E-Code buckets today. Started with the turns. Didn't want to lose a lot of light or reflectivity in them, so I only wanted to do the "dead" spots: the horizontal flat parts of the signal housing.
Since the turn signal housings are made of black plastic, I decided rather than scuff the chrome to paint it, I'd just scuff the chrome right off.

Came off pretty easy with a sanding sponge, and when I got it all, it darkened the appearance of the signal just a touch. Modified on the left, unmodified on the right:


Then I removed the lenses and reflectors from the buckets and painted them:


and cut some vinyl for the bottom of the reflectors to reduce glare


Reassembled:


And back on the car:


Nothing really accomplished, but I kept the momentum up, and sometimes that's all that matters.
 
Blower motor arrived today, but do to time constraints, I did a little quality of life mod instead. The twin piss stream washers were fine in the 70s, but thanks to Volvo part no. 30655605 (times 2) we're now into the 90s. And don't worry, it's still not on any car less than 10 years old, so its TB approved.

Looking forward to a nice fan pattern and a clean windshield.
Remains to be seen whether the pump will need an upgrade, but since I'm planning to put the tank and pump in the butt cheek, that shouldn't be too big an issue.

Spent the last few days working on the "other" cars.
Replaced the idlers and tensioner for my Forester's serpentine belt, and replace the rear leaf springs, shocks, brake lines and calipers on my wife's 2006 Chrysler Town & Country RollX conversion.

Wheelchair vans are f*ckin' weird. This is more or less normal fender gap:

Heavy duty springs(25% stiffer, apparently) were $4 more a side from rockauto, so I went with those. Might be a little higher than it was new, but all these vans have a wild fender gap due to the lift that allows the dropped floor.


There's a gas smell under the driver's side real wheel that's probably related to the evap code it's throwing. I'm tempted to get a cheap Amazon smoke machine and see what's up.

I recommend it. I've done it a number of times to good effect...it's only bitten me once.

My suggestion is, make sure you have an exit plan, in case the car is mis-represented. It's so tempting to save money and get a 1-way ticket. But if you get a round-trip ticket, you can just chalk that cost up to an insurance policy in case you find you've been working with a scumbag.

id honestly only do it if the seller is someone i trust from a community. never a rando.
 
It came out of the dishwasher much nicer. Gonna do a little more cleaning in the corners, but then I'm gonna reassemble after I test the resistor–or should I just spend the $$ on a new Volvo one?

Honestly, the one that bit me was someone who'd built a rather decent reputation in the community...he's gone now. But yeah...good riddance.

Just do your homework prior. Get the vehicle history report (carfax, etc), insist upon any pictures you need. Hire a local mechanic or a TBer to take a look at it for you. If they refuse any of it, you're better off without that car...
