Shorting the GAUGE sensor wires should be okay.
Just don't mix them up.
There are only two wires.

Shorting the wires on the wrong sensor would be bad. Extremely very not good.
For the gauge sensor:I've a question. What is the resistance across the leads of the temp sensor?
