I sure would hope a ZF 6-speed with gasser gearing.

Also pls make whiteblock cylinder head flow *some* air. A 400 hp T6 would be just as stressed as a 400 hp 16v.

I was casually browsing the local junk yard inventory and a 2001 S80 T6 popped up with ~120k miles. Delivered to my uncle's shop it was $625 so I decided to pull the trigger on it.

Honestly it's pretty clean. It's definitely missed an oil change before but no wild sludge, cylinders look pretty decent, and it has a fresh Volvo timing belt and water pump, which also bodes well.

So having committed to this idea fully I began casually browsing (and asked friends to browse) the local marketplace and see if we couldn't dig me up a 960 for some swap parts.

Lo and behold

Here we have a 1992 960. I scooped it for $800 with a fried transmission, and 136k miles. I'd have liked for it to be cheaper, but for the condition and being under an hour from the house I guess I shouldn't complain. No oil leaks underneath even. The guy said he picked it up from his uncle with a dropped timing belt. So at around 110k miles it had a cylinder head refresh and all new valves put in it.

So at this point what is the plan even? Well I'll be honest. I've only had one white block 6 cylinder apart ever. I picked up the 960 with express intentions of having the rwd swap components on hand, and being able to pull all the stuff in my shop at my leisure vs in the pull a part.

An added bonus is that this is an early 960, so it's got the better of the cam shaft variants. I don't know exactly what will and won't swap between the two engines from different generations at this point. Just ball parking stuff I bet that t6 will dump in the 242 with the stock intake and a kangaroos manifold (which btw is on the way from Bulgaria). I'm looking towards a mid sized turbo and that 400 wheel number is still in my mind.

I'm also leaning towards a cd009 on the trans side, feel free to talk me in or out of that.

i will be sad to see this car be not an 8v, but i certainly understand the siren song of the whiteblock, and i'm sure it will still be a very cool car.

Nice work on the findings!

And... Why is there so much hate on the non 8v stuff?

Adam
Because motor swaps are the new normal and people find joy in seeing other people struggle to make the glorious 8v live up to its potential.

personally, I'm not hating on a t6 swap tho

Don't know who everyone is. Because I always though white block swaps were pretty well received. No hating here and I too like swaps a lot. Personally, I like to make an old red block sing and it's the easiest path for Volvo glory for me.

I will reminisce about the tractor noises for sure. At the end of the day I've got a couple of reasons.

I've wanted to have a 6 cylinder turbo car for a long time. I had a 2jz swapped mk3 supra a few years ago, but I sold it off due to cost and just having too much. So that's part of it.

The other part is, at the power level I want and the usage case I want for this car I really think this is the best move. I can comfortably have good reliable power, but at the end of the day the long block is going to be more or less stock. Let's be honest here, I love road tripping, and I'd love to pack this thing up and go to Davis, ipd, etc. I'll feel a lot more comfortable doing it with this vs. with a high strung 8v built up on unicorn piss and the collective hopes and dreams of all of turbobricks.

I held off on a 5 cylinder because I have too many of them already, and I'm pretty dumb but lol @ a 16v.

To that end...

The kangaroos delivered. Right at 3 days from Bulgaria, which is like lightning. T4 flange, twin scroll, divided single wastegate output. I've got a Tial MVR on the old tube header, I think it'll swap right over. I don't have a turbo decided on yet.

For intake at first anyways, I'm just going to run the T6 manifold. I'm sure I'll end up with a sheet metal plenum intake of some kind but it seems foolish not to start with the T6 unit.

I hate that this won't be an 8v redblock. :cameron:
I see where ya fellers are coming from :)

Well, my 242 ideas has gone to see a redblock, but it will be 16v, tho...

Lovely project this!

Haha long way from it. I have at least stripped the 960 parts car/engine and crushed the rest. Once the 1800 engine goes in I'll be able to get the T6 lump on the stand and stripped down. Probably just going to clean up and throw some rods at it before it gets the 960 head.

Buying a trans is going to be the next big hurdle, probably cd009, probably gonna be this fall.
