LH3.1 or LH2.4?

Hey TBers. I have been combing through the google machine to find answers, but have only come up with dudes going LH3.1 to LH2.4. I am trying to figure out what differences there are between the two? What is better? What is worse? Fuel economy? Performance? I am pretty well versed on most aspects of the 2.4 system and it's ability to adapt and take a serious amount of vehicle modification from the user.

I've heard 3.1 is good for a few additional MPGs. Probably because it has a real TPS, not just an on/off switch. People don't like it around here because there was never a turbo car with 3.1 so it's not a great platform for that sort of thing.

Also parts can be a pain to find because it only came on 92 manual and 93 240s iirc.

LH 3.1 is more modern and refined, for a NA car I'd say it's functionally superior. Downsides are the lack of a turbo variant and the rarity means that parts may be harder to find and there is less overall knowledge. LH 2.4 is a good system too though, either one will do the job and I rather like them.

I've had countless LH 2.4 240s and a few LH 3.1 240s. There was no noticeable difference in the way they ran or in their fuel mileage they obtained. About all you will get out of switching to 3.1 is a system that is really hard to get parts for. Nobody rebuilds the AMMs anymore. Nobody offers a new AMM anymore. At least, not one that actually works.

To the other post above, 240 LH 3.1 is OBD1. OBD2 didn't appear on Volvos until 1996

Functionally superior, how? Quantify that statement.

Honestly I think I prefer OBD1, at least the Volvo setup where you can get the codes without any external hardware. That said, OBD2 readers are dirt cheap these days.

OBD1 equipped Volvos are nice because anyone can download the codes. If you have a scanner, OBD2 Volvos are much better because the codes actually point to a specific problem. Not so with most OBD1 codes. With OBD1, you still have to possess great diagnostic skills because the codes just lead you to a generalized area of trouble.

Newer, more advanced, more refined, I'm sure they must have improved something to justify a whole new version. Whether it offers anything compelling I don't know, I certainly haven't see anything that would push me to upgrade to it. 2.4 is a nice improvement over 2.2 if only for OBD, beyond that they all work.

Without facts, I wouldn't be sure of anything. Volvo created a "newer" version of their LH 2.4 AMMs and their 240 strut mounts. Neither are better or improved over the older version. Just saying something does not make it true.
