Lowering springs on 91' 940se wagon?

Hello, I've been looking into getting some lowering springs for my 940, but all the sites say they won't fit my car. My car doesn't have IRS. Would springs still work?

The springs will fit just fine. The reason they supposedly won't fit is because a 940SE came with Nivomat shocks from the factory. You need to replace your shocks with any shocks that are designed for the standard 940.

I do not know how to tell what I have, is this one?

Will converting them to normal shocks cause any problems/significant changes? Sorry volvo newbie here.
Nivomats have a self-leveling function which adjusts the ride height if you have a heavy load in the back of the car. A normal shock will not.

However if you still have the original Nivomats from 1991 anything you install will likely be a significant improvement.

Suggest the Bilstein Touring. Have them on my 90 745, good function, good price.

Why are you lowering? Looks/stance? Then rock on, lower away.

If you think it's to improve performance, sadly that is exactly what you DON'T want to do. Front roll center on these cars is destroyed when they are significantly lowered (say 40mm +).

I went thru several versions of "sport springs" on my Cheap Thrills Sedan..... finally upgraded to Ben's coilovers, which is by FAR the best thing you can do. Read the "Lessons Learned" last page of my build thread. Don't repeat the mistakes of others on this forum because "it looks cool".......

Mostly, I just wanted to get rid of the monster truck look gap, more noticeable in the front, plus so it doesn’t feel like it’s going to roll on every fast turn. I was looking at the ipd lowering springs originally

I originally wanted coilovers but the price and difficulty to install seemed extreme

I wanted the same and been driving on lowering springs since like 6 years with my 940.
Ride wasn't bad, but I also installed IPD sway bars a year later or so and they improved the handling significantly.
It's more than enough for normal street driving imho.

Lowering springs are harder to install than coilovers. Same process as coilovers but requires a spring compressor, and gambling with death.

IMHO, the IPD springs are garbage. Save your money and go straight to coilovers. Trust me, BTDT.......

Yeah I planned on getting the sway bars as well

With the older Volvos, coilovers require welding and drilling into the frame, correct?
I can't weld and I don't know if I trust myself to drill into the frame. If I have someone else do the installation, plus the price of the coilovers, it could cost a LOT.

you shouldn't have to, at least with Ben's (BNE) coilovers:
