Mike Jr's 1979 Volvo 245 project

We made more progress this past weekend. Got the body and fenders in primer. My boys helped again which was awesome.

I finally took the fenders off the car and cleaned those up prior to priming. We started with PPG DP90 Black, and then moved to PPG ECP35 Gray which is the 2k primer we use at the shop. I had to reprime one door because it had a small imperfection that I needed to fix.

Next will be a sh!t load of blocking then it will be ready to spray

So the roof on this car has been a problem. Originally it had the stock bolt in roof rack and it showed signs that it had been used quite often. Also the guy I bought it from had removed it and welded up the holes causing even more warping. We've body worked it, used poly prime, blocked that, primed with 2k, blocked that but it still wasn't right. My two best techs volunteered to help get it straighter but it was even kicking their a$$es, but we think we got it to a point now that it will be good, not perfect, but good. Worst cause scenario I'll put the 140 style gutter roof rack with the wood slats. That would be a little more of a vintage look so we'll see

Anyway here are some picture from working on it last night

Next is several more coats of 2k primer on the roof, then more blocking

The plan is to paint it this weekend...

the roof of a wagon doesn’t seem that big until you have to block it for paint :omg:
That’s what a couple of the air cooled Porsche dorks on the rally I just went on were commenting about; “damn, that’s a whole lot of nearly flat roof on your car.”

Not looking forward to when I bite the bullet to fix the crappy respray my car has had.

Curious what the total hours and end cost would be at retail, I don't know much about bodywork but this looks pretty easily into a 5 figure job, no?

Looks amazing, love the in process pics!!

Are ya worried about using or hurting it in the future? I'd be scared until the first scratch/imperfection I suppose. Although if I invested as many man hours as you have, it'd be that much harder to use it!

What color did you land on?

It's done! Get ready for a photo dump!

So we broke everything up over the 3 day weekend and did it all in stages starting with the roof, cowl and the underside of the hood. Being that the roof is such a large area, that is kinda hard to reach, we decided that it would be better to paint that first, let it dry, then tape it off to do the rest of the car. We also let the air out of the tires to give us a little better reach.
