Mike Jr's Sick A$$ 164 project

My favorite part of the first video lol

I ordered tires for the Works
205/45R16 for the front 9"
245/45R16 for the rear 10.5"

I'm going to try to cup the front lower control arms for the front to get it lower, and I think I can get it low enough with an 8" spring and Ben's adjusters in the rear.

Took the GF out for a drive Sunday and the car just up and died on me, so I had to get it towed...

And the tow...

Luckily we weren't too far from the house, so I called my wrecker driver from work to pick us up.

Prior to the drive I had let the car idle while I washed it so it may have gotten warmer than normal. I suspected vapor lock cause after it cooled down it started right up. It had questionable fuel hose routing right over top of the valve cover and intake/exhaust manifold. The plastic filter was right over top of the manifold and was a little melty when I pulled the hoses off. I rerouted it taking a longer hopefully cooler route, and put the filter down by the pump.

I've been driving it this week back and forth to work and so far so good.

In an effort to ruin this perfectly good 164 I started messing with the fitment on these obscene Works wheels. These wheels were originally intended for the Green 164 that I started this thread with, so putting them on a 164 was always the goal. I bought these wheels back in 22 from 5x108 Heavyweight on IG, and I've been racking my brain about tires ever since. I knew because of the 16" tire availability that I'd have two options, low profile stretch or hammy wide and tall. I knew that hammy and tall wouldn't work because of the clearance issues with the 10.5" in the rear so I knew I'd have to go with a stretch to some degree. I started with the front using a 205/45R16 Toyo Proxes R88R on a 9". Overall I am happy with the amount of stretch on the fronts.

Mounted on the front with an 8" spring it still needs to go lower by at least 2 inches or so

Here's my MS paint photoshop lol

I can't go lower than an 8" on the front without significantly effecting the suspension travel and ride, so I'm going to try to cup the front control arms and use the same shock and spring. I did this on 122 control arms years ago but never actually used them. I've seen it done on other cars but have never put it into practice myself. It's allegedly not supposed to effect the travel of the shock and spring. Aside from bags or a mustang II suspension I really don't know any other way to get it lower.

So moving on to the rear and the 10.5" wheels. Originally I order a 245/45R16 Toyo and when I got it it has waaay to tall compared to the front 205/45. The width would have been great, but there's not was it would have fit in the back with that height. I looked for a 245/40 but couldn't find one. I even considered a 245/35 or a 255/40 but came up short. I decided to try a 225/45 Toyo. I had looked on https://tyrestretch.com/ to get some idea of what it would look like but the only wheels posted where 205/40, 215/40, and 225/40 which wasn't too back but still a little to stretched for my tastes. I thought that a 225/45 might give it a little more tire width so I sent the 245s back and got 225/45.

I started getting nervous during mounting

And was like "Hell no!" after mounting

At this point I was like "These tires look stupid, F*ck these stupid wheels!" I was reluctant to even try them on the car, but when I did they weren't as bad.

I also tried the 9" on the rear just to see how that fit, and they do fit much better, but do I want to spend $XXX amount of dollars on lips and barrels for the rears to convert them to 9"

Also in the rear I swapped the 8" springs back in with the adjusted screwed all the way to the top, so I may have to run a shorter shock and possibly notch the rail and put in a cup there too.

I'd like some honest feedback on this, because I'm unsure what direction to go.

That 10.5" is just too much wheel for a skinny tire like that (in my opinion). Too bad they're not 9.5".

225/45 and 245/45 would probably be my choice, but the rears would maybe need some fender lip flattening. And it wouldn't go very low. So 225s might be your best bet to get the low ride height you're looking for.

It doesn't look like the 245/35/16 Toyo T1R is readily available anymore (most sites show the size, but don't look like they actually have the tire...tirerack didn't even list the model. Found a forum post from 2007 with that size shown )

Off to Japan to find the right tire size? :drama:

Careful what you wish for.

I'm in total agreement with both of you.

You're not concerned about the glorious opportunity for curb rash? I find it hilarious to see guys parking 24" away from a curb because they don't know where the car is, or their GF isn't available to hop out and spot for them.

But hey, it's your car...

I must have missed the details... What's the plan for potholes and speed bumps? Or does this picture reflect the lowest possible point, sitting on the bump stops? (There is still a bit more compliance to those rubber stops, of course...)

I suspect you'll find 9" a whole lot easier to deal with... for every challenge you face. And 9" is a helluva wide rim, for a boulevard cruiser. Even the following pic looks a little tight. I'd look into moving it inboard a smidge, if you've got any extra clearance there.

I wouldn't bother with a 10 or wider unless its a competition car. The amount of work it takes to fit something like that just isn't worth it from my perspective.

If you an squeeze a 9 in the back without major surgery I would opt for that route. A 9" wheel can support plenty of tire
