I have my car set up with Microsquirt 2 using stock distributar and coil. Car is tuned and runs well but Id like to change it. To either sequential COP or Wasted Spark. Which on will be easier and be a improvement over stock ignition.(Im guessing wasted spark) Then whats all needed as far as coils etc. I did a search but seems confusing, alot of info on WS with Lh. Anyways help will be greatly appreciated.

I think that the big question is how many outputs do you have for ignition?

1 = Traditional coil and amplifier
2 = Wasted spark
4 = Sequential

Then there's how much the hardware costs. Which may or may not be a factor depending on your ability to adapt whatever you have on hand or have to buy.

To go to wasted spark, you need a missing tooth wheel, either the LH2.4 factory 60-2 "sixty minus 2" flywheel/flexplate, or a yoshifab DSM CAS, or a custom wheel on the crank. To go full sequential, you can use a toothed wheel and a modified LH2.2 distributor, or a yoshifab DSM CAS. https://www.yoshifab.com/store/billet-redblock-dsm-cas-adapter.html

For coils, the MicroSquirt only directly supports true logic-level coils. If you want, you can run semi-sequential with 4 COPs in "wasted COP" mode.

whats wrong with your current setup?

Nothing, runs great. I have 2 240 cars. One is my 1993 sons which is messed up at this time. But mine 1990 240 with MS2, runs great, I just thought maybe Id do an upgreade on it. Swapping distrubutor caps, rotors, wires get kind of old. I try keep that stuff on hand.

I have 1990 Volvo 240
B230ft block and pistons w/maxspeeding rods
MS2 running stock distributor and coil 60/2 cps stock
IPD turbo cam advanced 2 degrees
4L60E w/2800 stall
90+ Manifold ported with up pipe for top mount turbo GTX3071r
530 8v head been ported-larger valves-someone on tbricks did work. Culberro did the work and did excellent job,
head milled a quite a bit
Kjet intake been modified and now is dual plenum
1000cc idi injectors high imp.
3 inch ex. with high flow cat and 2 mufflers(yeh, Im getting old and like quiet ride)
Car is tuned for gas and have another tune for E85 which I dont run much. Most e85 around here is crap, yes know how to test it. I run 18lbs on gas and 25lbs on good e85.
AFR ratio guage AEM
Boost gauge AEM
NPR intercooler, I think it does its job could do an improvement here, but I had a treadstone. I gave it to my son and installed NPR, did not notice any change. Would check with infared temp gun after a hard run was about the same.

-I need new spark plug wires and thought if I was gonna make a change now would be time to do it or at least start gathering what I need. All I can think of at this time. Thank you for any advice and or help.

In hard racing, I’ve had issues with keeping the LS coils cool. They should be mounted on the fender or firewall, which means you need custom wires.

If you want a 4-post wasted spark coil setup, the VW Jetta coil is a great option. It has a built in controller, which works well for uS. You might me able to get 740 plug wires to work with this coil if the coil is on the firewall.

The OE distributor, cap, and rotor setup are fine. They look the best IMO, but the cap and rotor are a wear item. The coil isn’t the best, but it works fine unless you’re running serious serious boost on worn out plugs.

If getting new plug wires, the $40 ones from FCP with the metal boots on the end are the way to go. They do require you to unscrew the spark plug terminal, and not all plugs allow this.

How’s the head working out? Is this the one that Sloopy sold and then I set up for turbo use?

Head working out great. It was one that was a brand new casting, I was running klracing intake back then but went to a dual plenum kjet afterward. Kl was just huge and welds started cracking but it was the cheap one. I appreciate the advice, the plug wire you are refering to must be the NGK's.

Ohhhh, did you change your user name?

These are the ones I’m talking about.

kind of, I guess. This is my sons user name, I always forget to log in under mine. I have his engine apart in his 240 so you might get another head to do if you are not to busy..

Distributor spark is just weak. Adequate, but weak. Going to VW mk4 Wasted Spark coil gets you huge improvements in general driveability, power and economy. If you go to COP, it' more work and money and not much improvement over wasted spark if you're under, let's say 400hp. YMMV.

do you have a part number for the vw jetta coil or what year and engine. Just want to make sure I get the right one. Thanks

I have heard the VAG WS coil is good for "up to 450hp".
It is quite cheap (100-120$ for a new coil I think, at least in Norway).

Then you need bracket for it, new coil wires..
I have seen some place it by the intake, so it looks "stock" (ish).
Some people place it on the firewall.

Sequential looks cool of course, but it adds a lot of cost and the gains I think mainly will be emissions and lower/partial loads.
