New Timing Belt Marks Don’t Perfectly Align

Hello Everyone,

I am installing a IPD turbo cam in my 1985 B21FT and am getting to the point where I put my new timing belt on and for some reason the belt marks do not perfectly align with the gear marks even though everything is set properly. It almost looks to me that the marks are printed slightly off as the marks on the belt can’t align with the dots as teeth won’t allow it. I will post pictures as they speak louder than words in this case. I am also using an sts adjustable timing gear.

The timing belt is a continental one.
 
Ignore the marks for aftermarket cams.
Good that you have an adjustable wheel.

If IPD provides an intake lift specification at TDC, set it according to that value using a dial indicator on the lifter. I usually use a piece of thick welding wire as an extension.

If no TDC lift value is supplied, set the cam so that intake and exhaust valve have the same lift at TDC. This is often a good starting point and recommended by cam manufacturers.

Accurately find TDC using a piston stop (made from an old spark plug for example) and a degree wheel.

My last timing belt (round tooth) was an OE version.....and the factory belt markings were spot on.

When it comes to the timing belt.... buy the best available. I expect you will realize the correct result.

It's fine as long as your actual gears are timed correctly, the marks are just to help you line everything up. It looks like every mark is printed half a tooth ahead of where it should be. Send it.
