No direction - the build saga of an 82 242 DL

Thanks! It's my favorite part besides electrical. I'm going to be mixing and matching 3 harnesses for the electrical on this thing.

I got lucky and bought a running parts car that a member here used the interior and doors from. It's been a good donor. Also sacrificed a crashed wagon for my floor parts. Some must die so others can live.

Did manage to get the first section of rail in. Sprayed a coat of epoxy on the section of inner rail that was getting covered. Ordered some POR15 to coat the rest of the inside of the rail with before I close it up. So far, the measurements I took are matching up.

That's some nice effort! Great work buddy!

I wanted to do a dry run before I welded the apron piece in since so much of the front sheetmetal depends on it being in the right place. All of my previous measurements are matching up great, but still...

I got a little carried away and it almost looks like a car again. Didn't really need the doors yet but figured I needed a change of scenery.

Lots of welding today, lots of grinding tomorrow. Really need to get some time in with my TIG welder and start using it.

Edit: I hate that copper weld thru primer....

Great!!

What are you gonna use the Tig for?>
It's DC only, so AFAIK steel and stainless only. The welder is a Primeweld CT520DP which I can fully recommend as a company. It's multiprocess with DC tig, stick, and 50 amp plasma with high frequency start. The plasma is the only reason I bought it. If I spent more time with the TIG it would save a ton of grinding though. The Lincoln mig is a 3200hd from home depot about 20 years ago. It took a 10 year vacation from my shop but finally found its way home. All I've done to it is replaced the liner when it showed back up.

Finally had a chance to finish the welding on the front corner. It's nice to actually check something off the list for a change.

Great work!!

What are those clamps called that you used to hold it all together? I think i will need to invest in a set.

Cheers!
Clecos. Mine are MRO brand that I bought off of Amazon. I bought a set that included 1/8" and 3/16" but all I have used so far is the 1/8". I also use 1/8" sheet metal screws and can go between the 2 without drilling additional holes.

Nicely done! My son's 81 sedan had some serious cancer in that area due to battery failure. I pieced it back together with plate and MIG.... but your repair is much cleaner and proper. I need to gut the engine bay of my 242 to see if I've got any damage to deal with.... just no time right now with the Barndo build in east TN.

Great work!

My case is alot more of a digging adventure tho, so i need to cut way more and so on. Ended up completely deleting the rail under the battery and now in the process of replacing it all...

Crapola! :D

Thanks! I'm ready to see the 242 build get started!

Thanks! I caught the video on youtube when you posted it. Looking good!

Hopefully in the next couple weeks I will be able to get back on the 242. The parts wagon left the shop in pieces the other day. It, along with some other projects have been taking up too much time and shop space lately.

Well, its almost been a year since the last update on here. A year ago is also the last time I made any real progress so this should be quick at least.

I believe I will be changing directions with the front end. My 92 245 that I traded for fills the void I had for a late model front end car. Its now wearing the GLT grill I had and will be adopting one of the sets of Ecodes I have.

I swapped the 82 fenders and core support back on and grabbed the 1980 grill. Ive also acquired a set of bumpers from a 83 242 Turbo in the junkyard so those will be taking the place of the 86+ bumpers I had in the stash.

I will need to find a better condition grill and bezels eventually, but I think I will enjoy the look.

Back to the real work needed before paint, the floor pan is next on the list. I wasn't happy with the way the donor section I had still had issues and wasnt covering the whole area. I parted out a 92 245 last year and saved the floor pan as it was in better shape. Today I drug it out of the woods and started stripping it down. I will be able to replace the entire drivers side floor with it instead of piecing it back together. This will save some welding and let me hide some of the seams.

This was the original donor section I was getting ready to use. The new section will cover all the way to the rear seat.

Also the engine is ready to bolt in, only issue being that I'm stealing it for my 245. So back to square one for an engine for this one.

And a quick closing shot of why I cant seem to get anything done on this car. Note that this isn't all of them. I hope to be down to less than 5 by the end of summer...
