Opinion on Catch Can for Improved PCV

Hi everyone,

Have a stock b230ft in a 740 with around 250k miles seeing max 10 psi of boost. New oil separator box maybe 30k ago and now running synthetic.

If anyone could give their opinion on the following I would much appreciate the advice. I have been researching this for a while but thought I would ask anyway.

I would like to install a catch can to improve PCV. With the oil fill cap off air is pumping out of the hole there. Dipstick never pops out.

My plan is to go breather box -> catch can -> intake pipe (where the current line runs to for the breather box).
Will this be good enough to increase PVC?

I might start with this and then try to add another fitting off the oil separator to the catch can if above is not enough.

And maybe I drive like a grandma but in the 2 times I've drained the intercooler in the last 50k I get maybe a couple of teaspoons of oil out. Always a little oil in the intake pipes though, throttle body is dry.

Thanks for any advice.

Hey thanks for the links.

Going to be a cheap diy catch can I make.

Are you suggesting, through the first link, that I will also need to run a line of the valve cover to the catch can to get proper crank case ventilation?

Thanks again

If you have the head mounted distributor you can install another vent in the engine block where the distributor is on B21-23. Having the vented valve cover or cap is optional- the most important thing is to have the factory breather free flowing and clean.

Thank you.

So I've read through the threads and am still where I started.

Looks like I will try the catch can and go from there. Unless it would not improve the PCV?

PHC: would I have to tap the block to add such a vent?

Any other opinions welcome, thanks again.

.

No. B230's have a plug (like a freezeplug) installed there instead of the distributor. You can get the new plug, install a hose fitting in it and then install it in place of the old one.
I had an old distributor laying around so I sawed the base off of it and installed 1/2 inch barbed nipple where the shaft used to go. I'll get to may car in couple of weeks to take a picture of that mod.

Thanks PHC.

Didn't realize it was a plug while I was out there.

Is the extra vent there working good for you to improve CCV?

Thanks again

Just an idea:

What if I were to run the catch can to a large vacuum hose.

I.e. Breather box -> catch can -> vacuum line to intake manifold

Any problems with this?

Thanks you

Doesn't work with a turbo and I'd think maybe it'd mess with the idle, depending on how much air goes through.

Thought I would give an update:

So I made a catch can and also added a second vent to the breather box. The second vent is off of the plug looking thing on the updated oil separator (toward the firewall).

So I have it set up as follows: 2 lines from breather box to the catch can to the pre turbo intake. Also have the vacuum line off the "flame trap" hooked up to the original line coming off the box pulling vacuum on the oil separator.

I believe I the pressure is getting better in the crank case but still have air coming out of where the oil filler cap is. One note is that putting a second line off the box where I did was probably not the best idea as there is some oil getting into that hose on its way to the catch can. Have only driven maybe 100 miles so far like this and have a teaspoon of oil or so in said line.

Anyway I'll update again if anything changes or if I decide to try something else.

Thanks everybody.

Pic of the added block vent on B230FT:

Sawed off an old B21 distributor I had laying around and installed 1/2" thread 5/8 diameter barbed hose fitting. Will finish building my catch can soon.

Look at Mishimoto, I got a nice 3 port for fair price. the bracket and connectors are cheapish, but the canister is a nice aluminum unit.
