Performance chips

Bosch LH 2.4 uses a chippable fuel ECU (assuming your '89 is 2.4) but most of the EZK ignition ICUs (apart from a very select few, and 16v "gold" boxes) are not chippable without adding a daughterboard. You kinda need both a fuel and ignition chip otherwise it will run like, as the kids say; "comprehensive and certifiable ass".

And also there's no real reason to chip tune a bone stock B230F in a non-turbo car. There's just nothing to gain.

So the answer is: yes, but why bother?
 
I've long been interested if you could tune a B230F with just a T cam and make any noticeable improvements.

My current engine is NA and pretty hopped up with a shaved and ported head and a K cam and I haven't found any off the shelf chips that work, the stock tune works great for me.

You can ground some pins on the EZK to add 3° of timing, if you want to fiddle with timing.

It was mapped out in our LeMons car on a dyno...that car had a K cam with 10.9:1 compression ratio, some port work, and a slightly modified exhaust system...it made 144whp when we were done. It outhustled the chipset we'd gotten from Sweden by a fair bit.

That’s pretty impressive

How did you make sure the ECU stayed powered so it didn’t have to relearn? Or did it not matter?
 
Well the race car still functioned like a normal car as far as the engine management was concerned, so we had constant voltage fed to the ECU and EZ-K as it would have from the factory. As long as the battery didn't die or we didn't unplug either unit, no memory was lost. Also, as it's a race car, we didn't really care too much about idle quality, which seems to be the only place that I've personally observed any learning.

As far as I know, the EZK ground pin mod works at all revs, plus the EZK is not even connected to the WOT switch. (The ECU, even the Turbo ones, are affected by the WOT switch if it's wired up.)
 
My memory is that when we were dynoing, we moved the timing via the 18/19 pin ground method and found no change to power production in any direction from base setting, nor relative to either mod. That part I absolutely remember to be true and may even be able to dig up the dyno sheets. I THINK I REMEMBER that not believing that a 6 degree ignition timing swing would produce no measurable result, the dyno operator checked and told us that it wasn't moving.

Now:

1) I certainly didn't check timing myself.
2) Perhaps the checker was mistaken.
3) We were on an aftermarket PROM. Is it possible there's software to defeat that mod? I know for a fact it functioned off idle.
 
I've got an EZK 148 with pins 18,19 and 20 wired up to a dash switch. From a knock perspective the -3, -6 settings absolutely do something. During testing the switch became my octane rating switch. In TunerPro you can change the behavior of the pins to any timing advance/retard you want. The mod does not change the base idle timing.

In daily driving I now use a 207. If I want to change timing I burn a chip. The 148 with the mod lives in the trunk as a backup.
 
Actually, the stock ignition map is very limiting in LH2.4. I only chipped my ignition with a chip for EZK from Simon and it made my car run much better. Smoother with even better pull of idle and it would wind out with power above 4k rpms. It also felt like the full throttle switch actually triggered something. lol. Yes, you do need to run premium. Well worth the extra price of the gas. I would also say that it got a few more miles per tank of fuel but I never measured.

I checked my notes from knock testing and the 2 EZK pins change the ignition timing for all speeds except idle. The pins have no effect when the idle switch is closed.

The factory code table at 0x1ff8 is setup with:
ground EZK-18 for 3 degrees timing retard
ground EZK-19 for 6 degrees timing retard
ground both for 3 degrees timing advance
(pin 20 is ground)
 
Hmm. Maybe in our case 6 degrees of timing swing really didn't make a difference to power output. I find it unbelievably hard to accept, though.

I think Kyle found this out with the General Leif car. There was a wide swing in timing that didn't do too much to add power.
I've also found this with NA 8v and 16v engines using aftermarket ECUs, even at higher CRs.

Either my brain isn't working right now or I never learned this but I'm trying to think of why this would be the case. I thought *all* engines responded to timing changes

There's a point where adding timing doesn't increase torque anymore, and will eventually start to decrease torque. Even without detonation.
Some engine are really sensitive, some are not.
