There's a point where adding timing doesn't increase torque anymore, and will eventually start to decrease torque. Even without detonation.
Some engine are really sensitive, some are not.

Well, you can get into an area where you lose area under the curve very quickly from the exact same thing.
This applies to other areas besides MBT timing. You can apply it to every rpm and load point.
