picked up a cheap V70 T5

I am back in a Turbo Volvo! ;-)

Yesterday i bought a dirtcheap V70 T5 geartronic, my2001.
It is loaded with stuf like RTi, leather seats and steeringwheel, OEM stereo CD, ECC, CC, STC and OEM telefoon :-P
but the nicest equipement is a Vialle-LPi kit! (worth 2000,- euro when bought new)
The car has 440000km on the odo. But it got an exchange engine (40kkm old) at 300000km.
This means this engine has done 180000km.
Still 10kkm to go to the next oilchange, still 20kkm to go to the next cambelt change.

The owner bought the car and immediately got into trouble with it. He got into a conflict with the dealer and got fed up with the car and left it standing for 2 years! Out in the open.
Needless to say it looked like ****, it was filthy, covered in grime, bird droppings and green moss... the tires were nearly empty. Techn. inspection had expired for more then a year.

It came with an independant inspection report (ANWB) which gave me confidence that the basics of the car are good. It also came with correspondence letters between the cardealer and the owner in which the cardealer described all kinds of efforts to fix the car (brand new throttlebody, automatic ATF-flush (backed by a sticker in the enginebay), inspection by LPG specialist with new gasoline-ECU thrown in...:wtf:)
Sitting in the boot were 2 brandnew looking empty batteries...That was a mayor pointer!

I had brought 2 of my own fully charged batteries that i happened to have standing around.
So i hooked them up in paralel using 2 sets of jumper cables and... it fired right up!
No smoke, no nothing, just a smooth clean stable idle.

So i made a test drive. The brakes were full of surface rust but the calipers did not stick. Braking was straight, all be it a bit grungy sounding. The car tracked straight and steered nicely. No problems.
All gears worked, but the shift were a bit harsh. The engine felt tight and powerfull so both engine and turbo are OK. Both gasoline and LPG systems worked like they should.

So i took the risk and bought the car dirtcheap. I just left the extra batteries hooked up and drove it home after airing up the tires! No issues at all except for tires feeling all square. Until i nearly reached home... The gearbox started flaring between 2nd and 3rd gear...(revs going up, 3rd gear not engaging for a 2 seconds, then BANG, 3rd engages.
But i got it home and measured the Voltage over the batteries with the engine still barely running: 9.8V !! Batteries nearly empty. I was amazed that the car was still running at all!
I switched the car off and tried re starting it, off course it didn't.

So here is my theory: The alternator is FUBAR. or the voltage regulator. The battery is not being charged at all. Strange thing is NO no-charge warning on the dashboard...(?!)
Needless to say that the car runs great on a fully charged battery but it will start acting up the more the battery gets drained... it starts by causing eratic behaviour of the electronicaly(!!) controled slushbox and a short distance later the engine will cut out completely and leave the car stranded with a dead battery.

I will throw in a known good alternator and see what happens.

Watch this thread for the follow-up and pics!

Perhaps the alternator indicator light is broken and then also not enganging the alternator causing it not to charge?

Is that possible??
I need to check if the charge light will light up with ign switched on and the engine not running.
If it isn't i will change it!

nice one Jan! Good score.

Just last week i took a ride in a similar age/equipment V70, auto, t5 and Lpi. Nice cars with lots of comfort and good performance. LPG is nice with the current fuel price too!

my friend just bought an 02 v70t5 and it is a nice little ride for sure!

good find, we only paid $3200 for this one with 115k on the odo.

DOP one with dual exhaust and sunroof? My GF her brother has one for sale as well, 284 HP on the wheels

Yeah he had it on the dyno a few weeks ago, 284 doesnt sound like a lot but its pretty fast.
I'm not sure but I believe he has a 19T @ 1,5 bar boost, bigger injectors and some more done to it.

Nice!

Gonna bring it to the NS next week?

I will try.... but i can't promise anything, stil busy doing the alternator swap.
Car still needs tech inspection(APK) and it must be reliable before i will use it long distance.

Some pics from the ad (it wasn't that clean when i got it!)

The LPi-injectors are clearly visible on the intake manifold.
The bottle on the rightside front of the engine is part of the flashlube system, it is supposed to prevent accelerated wear of the valves and valveseats.

swapped the alternator last evening (daytime waaayyy to hot, 28+C)
Guess what, succes! 14,5V after first start, after a run around the block it dropped to 13.4V with engine running.

Also fixed 2 headlights, 1 front mistlight, 2 license plate lights 2x front wiperblades and 2x headlamp wiperblades.

Car drives nicer and nicer the more i use it. It really packs a punch but it is not as fast (yet) as my 850T5R that i used to own.
(850 is lighter i guess)

Lol watch out about that tranny... sure hope they're cheaper over there..

if i end up having to overhaul it i will still be 'in the money'.:oogle:
First i will do this:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3IRdjXy5Ky0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
then a proper re-learn session after that we will see if slushbox overhaul is needed.

the car was rattling and shaking so bad at 60-70mph, it was just a PITA so i went to the tireshop to have the wheels balanced, when i came out i had 2 new rear tires+balance+valves, 2 front wheels balanced, one front tire had a slow leak fixed and i got rid of the 4 aftermarket locking bolts. LOL!
Turned out the rear tires were badly cupped and not really tech inspection compliant.

CC@70mph, ECC@22C, Radio on ch4 (classical) >> Total serenity has returned to the Volvo. Like it should be.

Check/replace the B4 servo cover, it is a common failure item on the 2001/2002 cars and can cause that problem. It fits in the back of the transmission kinda/sorta above the left axle area. It has an X on it and is held in by a snap ring. The original covers have a plate that is not very well installed and sometimes pops out. The replacement/updated servo covers(part # 30751262 in the USA) have a more permanent/solid way of attachment. If, after replacing this cover and flushing the fluid the transmission still acts up, but there is no shuddering or slipping aside from the issues with going into neutral/flairing between 2nd-3rd, you may be able to replace the valve body with an updated one before rebuilding the transmission. Both are spendy, rebuilding is even more spendy - sometimes the drums crack and a local trans shop uses a drum from some GM product instead - sometimes there's a sleeve, or should be a sleeve in the casing that gets worn out and should be replaced(or installed in the first place, it may just be running on the aluminum from the factory, I can't remember). If you do need to rebuild the transmission, or decide to do so from the get go, put a new Volvo valve body in there at the same time. Also, it never hurts to make sure the TCM software is updated to the latest version.

with a proper flush and the right fluid, the trannies are nice and reliable. we did flushes on the p2 v70s every 40k and hadn't had one fail yet
2001 and 2002 have problems with the b4 servo and valve body as mentioned above in addition to just normal wear and tear from poor design and extended flush intervals. Volvo is full of **** when they say these things don't need flushing, completely pathetic.

Another common fault with these transmissions is developing a delay when shifting into gear from a stop... Typically means it needs a valve body upgrade, but if it isn't doing any other shifting issues, it can usually be held off on. My parent's 2002 is developing a longer and longer delay into gear, no fun.

good info. This: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=47268
can happen too with the transmissions, a problem with the neutral engagement. doesn't seem too hard to solve that one.
