I am back in a Turbo Volvo!
Yesterday i bought a dirtcheap V70 T5 geartronic, my2001.
It is loaded with stuf like RTi, leather seats and steeringwheel, OEM stereo CD, ECC, CC, STC and OEM telefoon
but the nicest equipement is a Vialle-LPi kit! (worth 2000,- euro when bought new)
The car has 440000km on the odo. But it got an exchange engine (40kkm old) at 300000km.
This means this engine has done 180000km.
Still 10kkm to go to the next oilchange, still 20kkm to go to the next cambelt change.
The owner bought the car and immediately got into trouble with it. He got into a conflict with the dealer and got fed up with the car and left it standing for 2 years! Out in the open.
Needless to say it looked like ****, it was filthy, covered in grime, bird droppings and green moss... the tires were nearly empty. Techn. inspection had expired for more then a year.
It came with an independant inspection report (ANWB) which gave me confidence that the basics of the car are good. It also came with correspondence letters between the cardealer and the owner in which the cardealer described all kinds of efforts to fix the car (brand new throttlebody, automatic ATF-flush (backed by a sticker in the enginebay), inspection by LPG specialist with new gasoline-ECU thrown in...
)
Sitting in the boot were 2 brandnew looking empty batteries...That was a mayor pointer!
I had brought 2 of my own fully charged batteries that i happened to have standing around.
So i hooked them up in paralel using 2 sets of jumper cables and... it fired right up!
No smoke, no nothing, just a smooth clean stable idle.
So i made a test drive. The brakes were full of surface rust but the calipers did not stick. Braking was straight, all be it a bit grungy sounding.
The car tracked straight and steered nicely. No problems.
All gears worked, but the shift were a bit harsh. The engine felt tight and powerfull so both engine and turbo are OK. Both gasoline and LPG systems worked like they should.
So i took the risk and bought the car dirtcheap. I just left the extra batteries hooked up and drove it home after airing up the tires! No issues at all except for tires feeling all square.
Until i nearly reached home... The gearbox started flaring between 2nd and 3rd gear...(revs going up, 3rd gear not engaging for a 2 seconds, then BANG, 3rd engages.
But i got it home and measured the Voltage over the batteries with the engine still barely running: 9.8V !! Batteries nearly empty. I was amazed that the car was still running at all!
I switched the car off and tried re starting it, off course it didn't.
So here is my theory: The alternator is FUBAR. or the voltage regulator. The battery is not being charged at all. Strange thing is NO no-charge warning on the dashboard...(?!)
Needless to say that the car runs great on a fully charged battery but it will start acting up the more the battery gets drained... it starts by causing eratic behaviour of the electronicaly(!!) controled slushbox and a short distance later the engine will cut out completely and leave the car stranded with a dead battery.
I will throw in a known good alternator and see what happens.
